Shopping for a late model 4Runner

I'm going to be selling my Ranger here in the spring and I am very interested in buying a 2000-2002 4x4 4Runner. I really like the Sport Editions and really am eyeballing the ones in the 50-70,000 mile range. You guys seem like you know everything there is to know about these suv's and I just want to know how much these are worth. My dad insists that I need leather and he is helping pay so I guess he gets that vote. I am thinking no more than 18,000. What else should I look for? I am going into this blind and want to make sure I get a good truck that won't conk out on me in a few thousand miles. Thank you- jody

Glad to see you coverting to toyota. With low miles on the truck it will not die on ya. These trucks are pretty reliable. Just be sure that the truck has been maintained. Even if it hasn't but only has 50k on it, it will still be resuable, you will just want to do full servicing.

It will be for basic offroading. My truck is 2wd now but it is lifted and done up as much as it can be and all I want is a good 4wd truck.

With Toyotas, I wouldn't hesitate to go older - you'll still have a VERY reliable truck, and save some money for mods to "make it yours".

Depending on where you live, the price you've quoted is about right. I think I read a post at another forum where a guy paid $18k for a 2002 4x4 limited with similar miles. Limiteds tend to go for more b/c of the leather and wood trim.

Guys, correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the 2000+ Runners get the VSC thing, that's impossible to disable? I thought I remembered reading a thread where people didn't like that, but couldn't totally disable it...

Well I'm pretty sure I'd like to get a 2001 or 2002 Sport 4x4. They are going on ebay in near mint condition with 50-75k on them for around $16,000 which is fine with me. I personally don't care about wood trim and the limited badge, in all reality the hood scoop appeals more to me than the wood trim. I like the 01s and 02s because they seem to be a little more capable since of the standard traction control and other 4x4 features.

From a looks perspective, you're absolutely right about the scoop. Many here have what's called "scoop envy." Also, the sport flares are also the wider flares, that come on the limiteds. Good luck on your future purchase. I'm sure you'll love it.

Personally, I'd say go for a 99 or 2000 w/ an e-locker and 5-speed. Better than the traction control.

VSC showed up in '01 but like stated above '99-'00s were the years that started receiving the better headlamps, relocated cupholders, etc. and had the last of the lockers plus they sit an inch taller stock than the years that followed.

Danget! I HATE DEALERS!

I went and looked at a beautiful 4x4 Sport Edition 02 Runner. It had 70k miles, leather, everything- except a moonroof (oh darn). They were asking 19.9 for it "on special." I talked to them Sunday and they wouldn't budge, and today my dad called about it and they told him it was now 18.5. He called me and asked if that was what I wanted- OF COURSE!! Well turns out the dealer was looking at a 2wd basic model and its paperwork instead of the 4wd Sport. Welllll ลลลล, back to looking.

The worst part is that they are taking it to auction in less than a month were they are going to sell it for less than we are offering. Thats messed up.
