I need to replace the shocks on my 2wd 99 Tacoma regular cab and I don't know what kind to go with. Sears is putting in Monroe Sensatrac or Rancho RS500 and Les Schwab putting in Moutain Ryder II (Gabriel) or Rancho RS500. Any advice and personal experience with those shocks would be helpful. Thanks.

 

What kind of driving? What are you looking for? Comfort? Body control? Any lift?

I had RS5000's on my old truck, and liked them quite a bit, but that was not a factory suspension.

I just put ProComp ES3000's on my 93 4Runner, and they have good body control, but ride a bit stiff.

You will get a lot of votes for Bilsteins on here (and I can't argue with them - never heard anything bad from anyone about them)

I like the KYB's. Monomax for the towing/hauling(stiff) and the GR2s(10% stiffer than factry) for street use.

 

Yeah, Bils are the way to go. KYB Monomax are one of the stiffer ones out there.

My Bronco II has Sensatracks on them. Lifetime warranty, a decent ROAD ride. I don't haul, pull or do much (almost none and nothing tough) off-road in it at all, though.

The majority of my miles are curvy highways so handling is important as well as carrying loads or ocassional towing. It is my all all purpose truck minus 4wd. Right now the truck is handling very, very poorly on the curvy roads and that is why I am looking for shocks. I do take the truck into some really poor and unimproved roads as I live in a rural area but not all the time. I am not adverse to paying for better shocks but if I can get the same thing for less why not. It is a great vehicle and I plan on keeping for a long time so I want to make sure the shocks are right. All local shops (minus Sears/Les Schwab) push KYB's but they are pretty spendy and I am hearing mixed reviews. Thanks.

 

They are pushing those because KYB Gas-a-just is what came stock (at least on my 4Runner)

For mostly on road, I have heard good things about the Edelbrock shocks, and they are made in the USA. Summit or Jegs had a screaming deal on them not too long ago...

Pro comp es3000's:

I ran these for about a year and a half. They sucked. I didn't notice any difference between them and my old (blown) stock shocks. They caused my Revos to cup after only 20k. Don't waste your $$.

Switched to Bilsteins. Wow, what a difference! The truck handles amazingly on road and off. On-road cornering has improved 10 fold. You wouldn't believe how they eat up the wash-board sections you encounter on highspeed dirt roads. Simply awesome. You can't go wrong with these shocks. They are pricey, but worth every cent IMHO.

 

Skyjacker Nitros. Better than Rancho 5000's.
