shifting and starting issues
I have a 97 4runner with 185k miles, automatic transmission and I am having some weird problems with starting. I went out this morning and tried starting my truck and it sounded like the battery was dead. What was strange is that the electrical lights, gauges, etc. worked including the solenoid on the starter(I could hear it). I tested the relatively new battery and it was fully charged and fine. So I got back in and tried it again. This time I put the transfer case lever in neutral and it started right up. I had some difficulty shifting out of PARK into DRIVE, but eventually got it. I drove around a bit and then stopped and turned the engine off while I went shopping.
When I tried to start it again I wasn't able unless I shifted into NEUTRAL on the shifter(not the transfer case this time). It would then start and seem to drive normally. What is going on? Anyone have suggestions? thanks, rick

There is a switch on the side of the tranny that monitors when the tranny is shifted into neutral or park. I downloaded part of the FSM a while back and the switch is apparently adjustable but I don't have the pages that describe the process. Perhaps someone with a complete copy of the FSM can help you out.
