Exclamation Shifting from 4HI to 2HI?

I've had my 89 22re pickup for a couple weeks now and I noticed that when I try and shift from 4HI to 2HI it doesn't let me unless im rolling. The truck is a manual tranny with manual hubs. When trying to shift while stopped it just acts like there isn't a slot for the shifter to shift into. There is no grinding when I'm rolling and shift into 2 HI. Also the manual for the truck says that you don't have to stop or press the clutch when shifting between 4HI and 2HI but doesn't say you CAN'T stop. I tried pressing the clutch, putting it in neutral etc. Am I doing something wrong? The truck seems to perform flawlessly while in 2HI, 4HI and 4LO.

next time your trying to shift from 4hi to 2hi try turning back and forth slightly or try bouncing the throttle slightly while pushing on the stick, there is strain on the t-case and thats why it wont go out to easily

not sure on how toytas work, but its possibly that it may not shift into gear if its stopped, jsut like trying t oshift into first gear without the clutch.... if rolling, it might do it, if stopped it would die....

Are your hubs locked in?

yeah, if your hubs are locked in you should be able to shift in or out of 4hi without any problems if youre moving. it can be a little hard to shift out of when stopped due to binding between the front and rear outputs.

Superjoe, I'll try that. BTW, my hubs are locked until after I shift into 2wd.

what year/gen of truck do you have? do you have the 'auto hubs' or the add system? there are issues with the auto hubs not engaging/disengaging properly. use the search for 'auto hubs' or similar and you may find more info and suggestions.
