My shift lock just crapped out on me. when I press the button on top of the shifter it won't well... shift. It works when I stick something into the lock release. Any quick solutions???? please.

Do you have brake lights? Very well could be the brake light fuse, and/or the brake light switch at the pedel. Check to see if you have brake lights.

See?

Auto Tranny =

I'm sorry you're having problems, but I HATE Auto trannies. Phx made an excellent troubleshooting suggestion, however.

On the third gens the shifter won't release unless your foot is on the brake. If it is the same with the 2nd gens the sensor on the brake pedal may be broken.

Will it shift out of park if the override tab is used?

I tried the brakes and they DO NOT work. The fuse seems to fine. Where is the brake sensor located? Would a bad bulb maybe trigger this?

Its a round push button switch which should be located directly behind the brake pedal.
I had one go out on my corolla and it was kind a expensive if I remember right.

Problem solved! The third brake light bulb had gone out, I had no idea a bad bulb would make the shifter lock up. Runners are just full of surprises,

I have heard this before, but never first hand experienced it.

Have not had a rear bulb go out yet, in fact since owning my rig since Nov. of '98, I have only had a front turn signal go out on me, and that was about three weeks ago.
That is easy to tell, as the flasher in the cab will click real fast.

I guess this is a safety item Toyota does by locking up your shifter like that, but man, what if you don't carry a spare bulb?

I have spares I carry for the domes, rear, and fronts just in case one goes out while I'm truckin' down the road or trail.
