rust in the cooling system
I pulled the top radiator hose going from the 3.4 to the radiator last weekend and found the inside of the pipe coming off the engine was covered in rust. I don't want to get into green vs red, but I have had green in it for about a year now and before that, the stuff that came out was yellowish brown (dirty stuff). The engine has 140,000 miles on it. Is this normal, is there anything I can do to get rid of the rust?

Ehh.....you don't NEED Toyota coolant for the 5vzfe. They came with regular green coolant from the factory. But the red coolant is good stuff, and I recommend it if you have the money.
Flush your cooling system really good. Turn your heater selector on HOT (rear too), pull the coolant drain plug on the block, drain the radiator, and flush everything really good with a hose through the radiator.
Fill it back up with green or red coolant, mixing it 50/50 with distilled water. Park on a hill with the front up the truck up high. With the rad cap off, run the truck up to temp, and let it run for 10-20 minutes to burp all the air out. Don't fill it all the way to the top yet, so it doesn't spill over.

ya, I flushed it real good a year ago and filled it with green stuff. I didn't pull the hose off then so I assume it has been rusted since then. I don't think the flush is going to help this, but I could be wrong. Is the rust normal for an older vehicle? I bet more people out there have the same problem but don't even know it. And yes, when I drained it a year ago, it was basically brown fluid, prabably was green at one time and may have even been the original fluid.

i would say use the green if not the OE yota. the ?red? or gm orange coolant i will never use again. it has such fine particles that if there is any small cracks or leaks it will flow through them and grenade the hose when it gets hot. use the system flush and yes you will get rust in the system, i have used the rust additive and it seemed to help flush or break up the rust and get it moving in the system.
