Rust and Colorado on 3rd Gens

My truck was totaled and i am looking for a new rig. Well it seems all the low mileage 3rds are out in Colorado. So how do 3rd Gens do on rust out there? Is it a major problem. Any Colorodians have advice and or experiences? Any and all info would be appreciated.

What are you looking for? I'm in Austin as well and I am thinking of unloading my 2000 Limited 4WD w/ only 54k miles. It's stock other than a Toyota OEM NAV and OME shocks/springs.

They do use salt on the roads here mostly when it gets to cold for liquid de-icers like mag-cloride to work. Anyways Colorado (at least in the more populated areas) is very arid. We get very little moisture and the humidity levels are low so rust is usually not a big concern. But if somebody likes to play in the mud and not wash their vehicle it will get rusted no matter where you live.

It is good to know that rust really isnt a problem out there. I dont know why but it seems like all the manual runners with decent miles are out in Colorado--is this a conspiracy?

Now see, last year someone argued with me "on here" that they don't use salt anymore. I lived here for 12 years and what they used then was a mix of salt and sand. Now, I know they use the magnesium chloride to a certain extent. But once it snows to much, it defeats the purpose. I do live in Pueblo now on a temp basis, and it doesn't snow here as much as you guys get. Maybe they have different procedures for different areas? Sorry for the off topic swerve!

BTW - they might not use "salt" but that magnesium chloride seems pretty nasty too! However, I've never really seen any detremental rust on any of the cars I've owned (some surface rust, etc) - and I've lived here since i was zero.

I guess that is pretty convincing--then i might have to make a trip out to Colorado and get a new 3rd gen manual runner and on a wing and a prayer it will have a locker!!!

Well some idiot had the bright idea to use magnesium chloride on the roads on the western slope of colorado. Its gnarly stuff, but it's only used on state highways. MgCl2 will 'eat' all kinds of stuff on your car from brake lines to chrome. Best idea: tell your local government how much you hate it, and get them to stop using it!

I'm from Telluride, and I happen to know all kinds of people who drive aincient Toys without any rust at all. Thankfully, people from my town belive in snowplows and gravel.

hmmm.

Well, Third gens must be really different than first. Mine is rusted like no ones business. That mag chlor stuff eats the hell outta these early bodies.

There are no manual Limited models. It does have a RR DIFF LOCK too.

CRAPooollllaaa. I would have been in the market in a heart beat. You have now made me cry a tear.....it has become an ordeal to get a manual locked 3rd gen under 100k. If naybody heres of one let me know please.

you can even give them my number......i will even travel about 1000 miles from austin to aquire my truck.

i take that back--crying a tear seems a little "happy". I sheets a brick--was hoping it was manual.

Other than the transmission they are the same aren't they? So you'd only be out the tranny parts is all....

Oh and I've lived here since I was Zero and have very little rust on any of my cars.

~tc~'s transplanted ohio 4runner is a whole nuther story. Ask AxleIke.... you need a rust dust shield to work under that thing!

Well the plan is to build my motor/tranny combo the way i want and then have a complete engine/tranny to just through into the truck. this would minimize downtime--just like the factory does.

Did you find a 4Runner? If not, I have a 99 4X4, 5spd, moon roof, with locker that has 143,000 miles in remarkably good condition. (no rust) I live in Horseshoe Bay, TX if you are interested. It also has a dealer installed supercharger

Really no issues with rust out here on later Toyota trucks (1st gens beds are the worst) and mine is pretty clean considering it's almost 9 years old (made in late '98) but after any storms we have I hose the underneath down and it seems to keep the Mag-Chloride at bay.
