roof racks

OK Just curious. I was trying to think of a way to avoid shipping if you ended up wanting my rack. My in-laws live in SE Iowa, just over the river west of Burlington. My sis-in law goes to Western IL in Macomb, that's about as close to B-N as I can get.

IMO a steel tubing rack is WAY too heavy for a 4Runner as a comparable steel rack to the Surco(22 lb) would weigh 4-5 times as much(88-110 lbs), thus negating the ability to put anything of any weight on the roof without exceeding the 150 lb limit.
I think that the rack, complete with 3/8 sheet of plywood, weighs something like 60 lbs.
Of course, I haven't weighed it, but I've loaded the damn thing up with plenty of weight to go cross country and it's always been fine.
Granted, I was scared of the rack breaking through the fiberglass, but it never did.
Regardless, a steel rack won't help your gas mileage by adding all that weight up there.
Meh.

I have the Yakima Load Warrior.
A lot of the stuff on it I did myself such as the shovel and jerry can mount.
The Hi-Lift and axe mount are store bought.

That loadwarrior looks the business. I checked one out at REI the other day. Two stupid questions:
1. Do you get much windnoise with it?
2. How did you wire the lights (where did they enter the body)?

Chris's rack sits back further than mine, but this is how I wired mine.
I get no noise with my rack.
I use to, but that was before I had stuff on it.
I also have the Yakima "Wind Jammer", a little wing that sits up front that disperses the flow of air.

Here's a plug for the Wilderness rack by Garvin Industries. It's very sturdy and well made. I prefer it to Conferr (nicer welds, side supports, and mounting brackets) and it's a lot stronger than the Surcos and the like. The 4runner rack weighs around 40-50 pounds at the most. It is a great expedition rack and I trust it to hold my Pelicans.

I have zero windnoise as well... The way i wired the lights opened the sunroof and snaked a wire down the drain hole for the sunroof, the drain runs down and empties out right near the floor board on the driver side, looped it out of the tube, and back up to, through the fire wall and into the relay (realy then goes to the switch in the cab) and then into the aux. fuse box under the hood. (back on top of the truck) i ran the wire down the inside of the sunroof making sure to keep it clear of all moving parts. took the cap off the leading edge of the OEM roof rack drilled a hole through the first layer of the roof leading to the sunroof area and then pulled the wire up. dremmled the cap to allow the wire to go down the track and then ran it up to the lights. The ground then backtracks to the cap where i put a crimp on wire ringlet thing (cant remember the technical term) and screwed it to the body, under the cap. Silicon glued the snot out of it and screwed the cap back on... works great and no visable wires. I will try to get some pics and a write up on it this weekend. PM me if have any more questions or need something cleared up.

i have a 4" tall con-ferr. it's been up there since '95 and it's all rusty but still holding strong. i've stood on the rack and there wasn't a problem at all. it mounts to the stock rails on my '95 4runner. my rack mounts much lower than the yakima or surcos mounted to yakima racks
i'll probably heave it in the garabage at some point though. its VERY rough. the paint is all flaked off and one of the bars is rusting through. that's one thing the aluminum racks have as an advantage.
