Anyone currently running these rims from Wheeler's Off Road?

Just curious. I'd like to find some black steel wheels, although its low on the priority list. They have 3.75" backspacing, and are made for Wheeler's by Pro Comp.

on my off road tires, similar design with spokes instead of holes. Price is about the same, free shipping, etc. My only complaint is that the lug nuts are chrome and my half-assed black spray paint job doesn't hold up well, otherwise the rims are tough and look good with the tires black lettering out.

I was lookin' into getting a set of these sometime. I was gonna see if I could go a 33x12.50x15, but might be a little rub action going on. We'll see

Hey Data,
Noticed you have a 98 Limited. Your brake rotors may be 16 inch rotors. You may not be able to fit 15's. The caliper will be in the way.

Gene (Dread) and I tried to swap 15 tires/rims from his Taco to his previous 4Runner. No go.

Actually, those rims from Wheelers are designed with that in mind. They say you can run their 15 in rims even with the big brake calipers found on rigs that came with 16 in stock rims.

Any advantage of running 15's instead of 16's?

I think the tires are a bit cheaper in the 15 in sizes, other than that I don't know if there's any other advantages. I'm probably just going to go with 265/75/16 when the time comes.

Wheelers has both 15x8 AND 16x8.

the rock crawlers from 4wheelpartsphux dont clear the big front brakes on tacos/3rd gen runners without 1/4" wheel spacers. there are a couple of theories on why 15's are better for serious off roading for more tread contact aired down or some crap like that, but whatever. the biggest prob on 16's is limited tire sizes and cash (i looked it up on some swampers and 33x12.5x16 were $20 than 15's each). so if you want steel wheels wheelers has a sweet setup to run 15's with no spacers.

same here, but I'm gonna stick with the 16" size and the 11.5 wide tire.

that's why I'm sticking with the 16" size. but I think you mean 13" rotors. that was the upgrade option. I believe it was upgrade from 12" on the 15" wheel to the 13" on the 16" wheel. a 16" rotor would fit the 16" wheel. I know that's probably what you meant.

I may step back down to the 265's when I need new ones too since I have quite a rubbing issue at full artic. with these 285's.

I've been debating about this as well- it seems like sticking with 265's saves you alot of trouble- no rubbing, no re-gearing issues or re-calibrating speedo as you start getting bigger tires. I guess it comes down to how much you off-road. It sounds like you need at least 2.5" of suspension lift and probably at least a 1" body lift to run 285's without any rubbing at full articulation. I've yet to do my lift, but I'm probably going to stick with the 265 Dueler revo's I just bought a couple months back.

I agree. Here's some pics of my rear with the mud guard and without it. We have contact. yep. the front is fine and that's where I was most worried about rubbing before I installed my lift. I don't want to get the sawzall out after it either so the next set will be 265/75's.

Are my eyes deceiving me, or do you have pearl chrome bumpers?

your eyes are deceiving you. they are actually the stock gray painted bumpers. I told the salesgoof "no chrome at all!!!" and the gray painted bumpers were an option. I've only ever seen one '98 SR5 with the same color scheme and having a manual tranny 4wd V6 like mine since I bought it new in '98, and that was about a month ago.

Hmm, well, I may have just come up with a mod to do at any rate. I'm wondering how the chrome would handle black pearl paint....

I had e-mailed Gary Wheeler to ask a few questions concerning the rims they have made, and here is his reply:

"Tom, we found a rim and center combo that when used together just clears the brakes on the 16" tacomas. The 4runners that were equipped with 16" wheels do have a larger brake setup than the tacomas and while I haven't tried it I don't think they are going to work for the 16" 4runner.

Hmm, I wasn't aware that 16"/Taco was different than 16"/4runner. Good to know though!
