Replacement 3rd Gen shocks

My 96 is comming up on 100K and it's in need of some new shocks (still has the OEM stockers on there) I am going to be in the market for some replacements, but before i go and buy anything i need some input.

What i want
to retain the nice soft caddylike ride, but keep the body roll to a minimum,

What i don't want
Anything that is going to rattle my teeth out. I've got rancho's on my Taco, and i deffinately don't want those on the 4Runner. I also don't want to fork out a ton of money either.

I am sure there are many different replacement shocks, but this truck will be used 95% of the time driving on california highway's and long roadtrips, it will maybe see 1% offroad (pismo) so offroading ability isn't important to me.

Suggestions?

Caddylike ride? 4Runner? I suppose after 100k miles a 4Runner probably does handle like a boat...

If you were pleased with the ride from the OEM shocks (can you remember how it rode when the shocks were relatively new?), I would suggest putting OEM shocks from Toyota back on (or figure out who makes them).

I personally prefer a stiff ride for the sake of great handling (for an SUV), thanks to Bilsteins. Hopefully some of the other forum members can provide you with other choices. Good luck!

I replaced the stocks with Bilsteins. It's now stiffer, and handles like a supra. Much more controlled feeling/safe feeling.

You want the old man ride then go with Tokico shocks,I think those are the OEM shocks rebadged as Toyota's and they're only $220 from www.shox.com. You also might want to get new OEM springs too.

I wish.

I drove my friend's '94 TT the other day and it sure made me miss my Eclipse a bit.

If you like the way it handled for the first 100k miles, then why change it up? Just go back w/ stock struts/shocks. If the coils are sagging, then get some stock coils to go with them. You can probally get a set of used coils, struts, and shocks w/ 40k or less on them for $100 or so from a member that's done a lift swap.

Thanks for the reply, I love the nice soft ride, but lately it's been wandering, and I can feel the tires rebound sometimes, so its time to replace the shocks anyway. I have thought of just stock replacements, but wanted to get the opinions of others, and see what other options i have.

You could also get OME N91C's and N86C's, but they might not do too well w/ the soft OEM coils.

Have you thought about shocks like Monroes? I think I remember somebody saying that they got a soft cushy ride from Monroe sensatracs.

That's what I just put on (along w/ a 2.5" lift). Those are OME's "comfort" valved shocks. They definitely firmed up the ride, but not so much that its uncomfortable on the highway.

Does Edelbrock make shocks for 3rd gens? I didn't see a listing on their website, but that doesn't necessarily mean they dont have them...
