Fit a piece of cardboard (crudely molded and cut to fit, not perfect) under there, and the cardboard will just run it off, like Midiwall said. You can reuse the piece you cut, too, if you wipe it down after you use it to remove excess oil and keep as much as you can from soaking into the cardboard.

An old indian taught me that when I worked at City Garage.

i do NOT have nor do i want to do a relo kit. I am running syntho now and will not have to change for 8-10k.

I like the funnel and cardboard idea. will do either of the do next time. the cardboard actually seems easier cause i can minipulate it how ever i feel.

I just let it drip. I keeps the skid plate from rusting.

.

I have not personally tried this, but i'm sitting here thinking----

I use those fram filters with the gorrilla snot grip stuff on the end so it makes it a little easier to take off.
Couldn't you throw a walmart bag around it filter and all (once loosened) and then unscrew it all the way? I think this would catch most of the oil right?

wouldn't really be a tidy trans. from the bag to the pan, but thats not the point here I guess...it would keep it off the skid plate and stuff I think.

I'll try it in 1000 miles and let you guys know how it works

1 - ditch the Fram
2 - unless you can get your hands in there real quick you'll still be spilling a good amount of oil before you can get that bag in place. The very second you break that seal you spill oil.

I've tried the bag trick. It's better than nothing, but not as good as the funnel and hose.

Take a plastic bag and put it over the filter as you're turning it (at this point it is probably already loose).

You'll be able to tip the filter directly into the bag, without worry of spillage.

I use a small sheet of heavy plastic after removing the skid plate. The plastic stays in place and I wedge it in such that as soon as the filter seal is broken, the oil runs down the plastic into the drain pan. The plastic is easy to wipe off, fold up and I put it in the bottom of the drain pan when I'm all done. I AM, however, going thru the wheel well and trying a pile of paper towels instead of taking of the #$*%!&@ skid plate off this weekend.
