Recap of Old Man Emu spring research

As many of you already know I am close to an Old Man Emu lift for my ride.

Since many of you run OMEmu already, and even Sonoran Steel uses their equipment for some of their lift components, I feel pretty safe in going this route.

I have acquired a lot of info and I am creating this thread to summarize the old man emu springs only

In all cases I am referring to OLd Man Emu applications for Runners only-you Tacoma guys have even more options it appears.....

For the front springs I can choose between
880
881
882-edit in 6/26/08- requires extended length shocks!
883-edited in 5/8/08
Please advise if I have left any front springs out-

For the rear springs I can choose between:
861 (edit in 1/21/11-thanks brian2sun)
890
891
900
901
906

Please advise if I have left any rear springs out-(yes I know about late 90s Landcruiser springs)

I am not attempting to build the ultimate rock nor mall crawler-mainly I just want to clear my Nitto 265/75/16 tires and have better load capacity without the rear butt sag.Hoping for good ride manners on pavement and same off road.

I am also hoping to avoid front diff drop.. It is my understanding that if I stay within a 2 inch to 2.5" lift I should be fine in that regard.

I am not talking shocks yet, just springs. My intent is to use new Old Man Emu springs with my 2 year old Bilsteins and see how that helps/hurts my road feel. These are the yellow bodied shocks with blue boots that I got as replacements for the worn out factory shocks.

I welcome your information, opinions and suggestions. I feel like I have researched this to death....

bump- anyone have any thoughts?

I just saw a picture of 891 springs on another thread-they do not seem to have any actual lift (are not any taller in height) compared to the stock springs I am presuming they are intended for more load and less lift.

Bueller? Bueller?

the 891 springs are actually a little shorter than the 890 but they have a higher weight load capacity but without a lot of weight they will ride harsh!!! For what you have describe you want I would suggest the 881's and the 890's you might have a little rake which I like but if you don't you could get a toytec.com topplate spacer in the front to level it out. And I would suggest getting it all from toytec.com as well. Hope this helps

Well you have a 99, so really you shouldnt have an issue with clearing your 265/75's. Are you rubbing now?
If you are not looking for lift then the 880(or881) and the 906 combo is fine.
If you want lift, you can do what the majority on here have done and go with the 890's in the rear and the 881's up front (some with a spacer) or the tundra springs.
With the 880's or 881's you do not need a diff drop.
906's your panhard is fine. 890's some say panhard is ok, others say no.
For ride v. load. You have to decide which is more important

Are you going to add a winch to your ARB front bumper? If so, I'd probably go with a 882 up front, but 881's will be okay, too, I think. For the rear, 890's would be a good choice, but I would get airbags if you haul a lot of junk.

BTW, I suggest going with OME shocks all-around, too. They are designed to work together as a set (with the springs). You could sell your Bilsteins pretty quick in the classifieds here, anyway.

881's with the 890,891, or 906 will suffice. Just depends on load and towing between those rear springs. I had the 891's, I understand the heavier load or harsh ride idea...I run with spare tools, hi-lift, spare tire, sub box with two 12's and an amp, along with my Boxer, with stock bumper...and I guess IMHO I've never gotten super harsh on the ride. I noticed the difference when I added shocks and swapped springs, but I guess I've never really riden in a really "Plush Runner" as well to know the difference. When towing the OME's did a heck a lot better than stock.

I pm'd you back.

"Hello,
I am giving you the approximate lift heights, your exact amount of lift will vary slightly depending on the condition of your current springs. The front heights are respectively: 880- 1.25", 881- 1.25", & 882- 2.25" and the rears are: 906- 2.0", 890- 2.75", & 891- 3.0". The 882's are not an ARB/ OME recommended fit, but our experience has shown that they work well with some applications. Please feel free to call me on the phone and I can go over this in detail and let you know how each set-up may work/ ride.

CJL@4x4connection.com"

I also have heard that if you don't reguarly carry 660#+ that the 891s are stiff.

I have TRDs up front and 890s in back. I like both of them but I need more rear capacity so I'm going with a set of 891s. The 890s carry alot more than stock and added some lift.

thanks this is exactly the type of discussion I wanted to see . This helps me quite a bit.

cackalack- Eventually maybe a winch but not right away.

Gerdo-those height figures are most helpful -appreciate that sir.

Godzilla-yes I am rubbing now with 265/75/16s- I believe I do not have the tall 99 springs or they are 'sprung'. I am leaning toward 'ride' over 'load' as it is rare that I have the back end all that loaded up.

4Runner202020- thanks for your suggestion, that is the setup I am most strongly leaning towards.881s up front and 891s in the rear.

I want a bit of rake but nothing too steep.

And I just called the auto teller and my Economic Stimulus Cash is in my account. Owww owww owww my wallet is burning .

Well I have a 99 which had the taller springs but swapped them out to get a better ride with the OME. I went with the 880's + 1 OME trim packer in the front and 906's in the rear. I just had my 265/75 Terra Grapplers put on over the weekend and have no rubbing yet (and this is even with the limited flares) though I have not flexed it out yet. I can take some shots this evening so you can see and Ill measure my heights.

I am geeked that this discussion is going on! My 2nd gen looks like i am smuggleing fat girls around in the back of it.. and I want to put new rear springs in it. So what I'm gathering from this is my best bet would be to go with 890's because I normally have about.. ehh.. an extra 200lbs of junk in the back. tow chains, tool box, and it will pick the back end up a few inches which is exactly what i'm looking for. The truck will be paid off within the next month so I can start doing stuff to it.

thanks Godzilla that is very nice of you. I may need a trim packer up front also-but am not against a little rake.

Ron,

I was leaning towards the 881 and the 891 as well when I first started looking at the OME setup. After some research, I realized that it would give me way too much of a rake. So after doing a little more research, I was gonna go with 881 and 890 and I had seen someone(MTL_Runner) with that setup, so I PMed him. Finally, he told me that the 890 would still give me more rake than I wanted. I am looking for a better ride than load as well. So I eventually came to this setup: 881 up front and 906 in the rear. You can check out his 4Runner here.

Since I didn't want 285's I ended up going with the 881/906 combo. It's exactly what I wanted (clearing 265/75/16's) with a little bit of extra wheel-well room. I left my stock Tokico's on, and it's stiffer than I would like. Bilsteins are pretty stiff anyway. If I had the extra cash, I'd get the OME shocks, although some say they droop too far and cause CV failure without limiting straps. Check my build thread in my sig to see what the 881/906 springs did to my '97. My current setup is great off-road too. I got mine from ToyTecLifts and they were great to work with.
Good Luck!
