I hadn't noticed this issue until it snowed. However, after the 2nd time the truck did a 180 on me as I was coming to a stop I decided something wasn't working quite right. Apparently, my driver's side rear wheel is locking up long before not only the other back wheel, but long before any fronts even get close to locking up. And then it won't unlock until it's forced to let go with engine power. This isn't good when driving on snow and ice. So i was forced to run with the rear locker engaged and in 4wd to keep it from locking up every time i touched the brake pedal (while in the snow/ice). ANYWAY, I was wanting some ideas from you guys on what I need to be expecting. Anyone ever had this happen? I plan to disassemble it here in the next couple of days so I can take care of this issue before my treck to the Rockies here in about a week for some skiing. Just looking for some ideas on what in the world it could be. The truck is a 99 4Runner limited with 110k miles... I've never messed with the rear brakes, and KNOW this wasn't an issue last year. just a guess, have you got a bad axle seal? are the insides of your rear wheels really dirty?

 

Seems like SLCPUNK's rig was doing this not too long ago...

 

3 winters ago, i came out in the morning to go to school, and the Runner wouldn't move! i thought what the trash!? but after i gunned it... it broke loose, the grease would freeze the wheel in place, and when it gave way, it sounded really bad... it ended up being an inner axle seal

 

Yes, axles have been seeping since i got the rig over a year ago. Everytime i try to take off after having set the parking brake, it will make a "bang" as the brakes lets loose. I know I have leaky seals, but never had anything like this happen. Maybe I'll just get me some carb cleaner and clean out the drums real well and hope that helps. I just find it odd that it's doing this all of a sudden. Obviously sooner or later I'm gonna have to bite the bullet and put some new seals in, I've just not been exactly looking forward to it.

 

when it happened to me, it was all of a sudden too.... the axle fix isn't all that expensive, there's a write-up for it here if you want to tackle it yourself...

THanks. Yes, I've seen that before. Although it's not that expensive it is time consuming. I've just been putting it off. Hopefully I can make do without it until spring when it warms up a little.
