Looks good

That is about what I had drawn up, 2x2 tubing with some side bracing using a bolt as a pivot and a hitch pin to secure it. I do think I would use two locking hitch pins so it wouldn't sprout legs and walk off.

I would suggest taking a grinder to those "sharp" corners and hitting it with some paint as CS doesn't take any time to get fugly.

PAINTING

I will paint it for you guys.... Not enough time in a day. I wanted to make sure everything is going to work right before I made it pretty.

Looks good. My only suggestion is to move the tire down another 4-5 inches to gain a bit more visibility out the back window.

Also, what's preventing it from flopping all the way down?

only problem about lowering is the departure angle for off-roading. and when the arm swings down, it appears that the swing arms hits the 2x2 square that goes into the receiver hitch.

Beach,

I'm with you on the dep. angle- its a trade off. Based on the picture, the window is pretty well blocked. I'd move it so the bottom edge of the tire is just a little above the pin. It'll also reduce the leverage on the welds and such. What would be sweet is an "L" coming out of the hitch that would offset the tire off to one side.

Sorry Chris, I just now got a chance to check my email and I see somebody is already hosting them for you. glad it worked out.

Brian, did you see my vid I posted on the vid post sticky page: https://www.yotatech.com/forums/show...606#post231606

I haven't gotten the chance to install those shackle hangers yet. I nail a GMC Sierra and krinkled his rear bumper for him so I've been waiting because later I'm going to pull the bumper and see if there is any damage to mine, can't see any but there may be some hidden.

And finally...

Looks good to me. my only concern would be going into a store only to come out and find the whole thing missing.

Three lockable pins could fix that! Not a bad design, but I'd probably brace the top and bottom L's with some 1/8" flat stock for additional strength.

Great MOOOZIK!!! Nyuk nyuk nyuk!

Your rig looked funny all covered in mud except the tail end is clean as a whistle!

Sorry about the crash! Hope it all comes out good! I just fabbed up some diff drop spacers today out of some SS 2" round bar, so now a trip to Lowe's for some Grade 8s and I'm set.

Let me know how the shackle hangers work out, I love mine and they add the look and feel of ruggedness to my rig.

I went to the Bama game Sat. night. They KILLED Auburn. Worst beating since 1975. It was a great game! Roll Tide!

bracing

quote:"I would brace the top and bottom L's with some 1/8" flat stock for additional strength".

What would this help? The bottom slabs are 1/4" thick plate and the tubing is 1/4" side wall.... What is 1/8 flat stock going to help? Welds are stronger than steel... I jacked the rear of the runner up with the top L and left if over night... It didn't move.

.... I think Mad Chemists means chop a few inches off the vertical support bar, not drop the receiver insert.

Thats what I mean, but BeachTaco is right about the clearance- not from receiver, but from the tire itself scrapping as you come out of a deep hole- the lower the tire on the arm, the closer it'll be to hitting. I would rather trade a bit more visibility on-road for a bit less clearance offroad.

Another suggestion is to add more support betweeen the two plates up top, to prevent the arm/tire getting pushed rearward into the rear and smashing out the window in case of an accident or backing into a tree.

Damn. At those kind of approach/departure angles, I would think you would've already damaged the nose of your buggy. Didn't realize Runners were suitable for cliff diving/repelling...

I kinda copied and refabbed a Fabtech tire mount.
It will fit up to a 37" tire and it is lockable. All you have to do is put a small padlock through the hole at the top of the threads and you can't remove the gigabig wing nut.

that looks really nice, except most of us on this thread are interested in something for a 4Runner.

I know I know.

But I thought I would contribute a little for us pickup minority.

The topic did say rear tire carrier.

And it would work for a runner if ya mounted it to the roof

I 've seen dumber things mounted to the roofs of SUV's.

Seems like a good deal for the money, especially since garvin gets like 50-75 bucks for the spare tire mount for their roof rack.

I myself do not need one but I was wondering...

It seems like there could be a better way to secure the hinge than a cotter pin. I am not trying to knock your design, for the money it is a good solution, but on the trail it seems it could rattle around or sheer off. Do you think this is a possiblity?

Since I have a dog, I use my tailgate quite a bit, I know others don't, it seems if you do need to get in the back often, this design may not best suit your needs.

How can you afford to include shipping in your price? Seems like a big expense to eat with steel.

Overall though I think you have designed something that ultimately suits YOUR needs and i am sure it will suit some others on this board as well. Good Work!!
