Thats what I mean, but BeachTaco is right about the clearance- not from receiver, but from the tire itself scrapping as you come out of a deep hole- the lower the tire on the arm, the closer it'll be to hitting. I would rather trade a bit more visibility on-road for a bit less clearance offroad.

Another suggestion is to add more support betweeen the two plates up top, to prevent the arm/tire getting pushed rearward into the rear and smashing out the window in case of an accident or backing into a tree.

Damn. At those kind of approach/departure angles, I would think you would've already damaged the nose of your buggy. Didn't realize Runners were suitable for cliff diving/repelling...

I kinda copied and refabbed a Fabtech tire mount.
It will fit up to a 37" tire and it is lockable. All you have to do is put a small padlock through the hole at the top of the threads and you can't remove the gigabig wing nut.

that looks really nice, except most of us on this thread are interested in something for a 4Runner.

I know I know.

But I thought I would contribute a little for us pickup minority.

The topic did say rear tire carrier.

And it would work for a runner if ya mounted it to the roof

I 've seen dumber things mounted to the roofs of SUV's.

Seems like a good deal for the money, especially since garvin gets like 50-75 bucks for the spare tire mount for their roof rack.

I myself do not need one but I was wondering...

It seems like there could be a better way to secure the hinge than a cotter pin. I am not trying to knock your design, for the money it is a good solution, but on the trail it seems it could rattle around or sheer off. Do you think this is a possiblity?

Since I have a dog, I use my tailgate quite a bit, I know others don't, it seems if you do need to get in the back often, this design may not best suit your needs.

How can you afford to include shipping in your price? Seems like a big expense to eat with steel.

Overall though I think you have designed something that ultimately suits YOUR needs and i am sure it will suit some others on this board as well. Good Work!!

CS 2" tubing 3/16" thk only weighs 4.3 lbs/foot so this thing without a tire on it isn't going to weigh that much, perhaps 15-20 lbs at the most. Shipping won't be bad as he can take it apart and send it in a narrow container. Besides, CS is only about $0.40/lb, so you are paying for the labor/work, not the materials anyway.

I was thinking about this today, and was wondering how hard it would be to instead of folding back towards you to allow room for the rear hatch to open, could it be made to fold to the side instead so it's not in the way as much when opening the rear hatch?

Great idea but what happens when you want to pull a trailer like I do every weekend?

I've thought about that too, because every time I go wheeling I'm towing my trailer with my wife's dirtbike on it. So, I was thinking of two ways. The first being a double hitch setup like the ones that Northern Tool makes. That would work okay, and the second way is simply making a place on the trailer to mount it to, which is probably going to be the way I'm going to do it.
