Rear Speakers 2000 4Runner

I know this has been discussed at length and I did a lot of searching last night, however, I am still a bit confused as to what the speaker size is in the rear.

I see some posts where 5.25" speakers fit fine with no modifications, I have seen some that say 4" speakers need to be used and a bracket made, and everything in between.

Crutchfields does not list anything for the back, and Best Buy shows 4"

I am going out today in search of some and wanted to see if I could get a little more clarification around this issue. I don't want to buy something and get home and it not fit and have to go through the hassel of returning it for soemthing else.

Thanks

if the 2000 4 runner is anything like the '97 runner then it's a 4" speaker in the rear doors. several years ago, i tried fitting 5 1/4" speakers in, but they wouldn't fit into the plastic housing. so i had to EPOXY them in.

last year, i figured i should get new speakers, and i used a dremel tool to cut out the plastic housing so it could fit my new 5 1/4" speaker. Now, i ran into a little problem with this, if i would have bought a "deeper" speaker, the rear window wouldn't go down all the way (which BTW is one of the coolest features of 4 runners) because it would catch on the magnet of the speaker. however, mine happened to fit perfectly, so i was okay.

I think i am going to go to home depot soon, and build my own speaker housing with some plywood or some plastic material if they have any.

Originally, the main problem with installing 4" speakers, is that the 4 runner came with an odd-sized 4" 3 hole pattern speaker. most 4" speakers that they sell in america come with a 4 hole pattern. thus, why people may need to get a bracket, or try to squeeze the 5 1/4" speaker.

i hope this helps!

Check out sschaefer's website:

http://www.fastq.com/~sschaefer/polk.html

I used it to install my a/d/s 235 5 1/4" on my rear doors with MDF. The only difference is I used 1/2" MDF + 1/8" plastic spacer instead of 3/4" MDF. This give me similar back clearance, but with less interference with plastic on the door trim cover.

a/d/s 235 has 2 7/16" mounting depth, which probably the max depth it will fit, allow rear window to go down, & with minimun interference with plastic trim on the door trim cover.

If your speaker also has fat lip like my a/d/s, you should also play around (rotate speaker in several direction when is on MDF, use tape to temporary hold them, put door trim cover back & play with it) with location of mounting speaker to MDF, to ensure minimun interference with plastic trim on the door trim cover.

My a/d/s also has speaker terminal on both end of speaker. So I tied wrap speaker cable toward to the front on speaker, & ensure the speaker cabel does not stick out further than the back of speaker. This will ensure speaker cable does not rubbing on the window, when window is going up & down.

Also get some 1/3" door foam weather strip from hardware store. Use it between speaker & MDF, also MDF & door metal frame. It help speaker sealing & eliminate rattle sound between them.

Hope it help.
