Hi everyone, I am getting ready to replace rear main seal on 4WD 99 4Runner. What else would be recommended to replace while transfer case and transmission are down. The runner has 178000 miles on it and would like to do this once. Thanks in advance. -Dennis

 

Well if you've got a manual, I think it would be pretty obvious to do the clutch. Otherwise, I can't think of anything else you would need to do with everything down...

 

It is an automatic. I didn't know if I should also change head gaskets, cam seals, etc.

 

I'd probably inspect and replace if looking bad the following things because you will have easy access with the tranny out (not sure how much rust problem you have there or how much you can spend):

Exhaust gaskets or other exhaust components
Brake lines (rear)
Fuel lines/filter
Drive line components, center bearing etc...
Torque converter seals
Look for cracks on the flex plate
Fire wall insulation
Motor mounts
Tranny mount

 

Thanks, I'll look at those things. I am the fourth owner, but the truck has always been titled in the south, so really no rust to worry about.

get a speedy sleeve to go over the crank otherwise it will still leak due to the crank grooving

Never heard of speedy sleeve, where can I get one and how difficult to install?

just gentle tap it around the end of the crank and do the seal like normal. the seal riding on the crank causes a small groove to wear in the crank allowing oil to seep by the seal even if its brand new the thin sleeve covers the groove so no leaking.

 

Thats a good idea but, find a sleeve for a 3.4L that link above is for a 22R. Some auto parts stores carry speedy sleeves or can order them.
