I'm currently in the process of swapping the 3.4 into my 92. My question is the rear housing plug on the backside of the heads. Do you need to pull the cams in order to replace this part? Or it is as simple as pulling the valve covers off to gain access to that plug? Check the illustration below for 'housing plug.'

 

iirc, you have to remove a camshaft bearing cap to remove that housing plug.. but im not really sure,
thought i saw it on the FSM when I was fixing my valve cover leak. Hopefully someone with experience and knowledge will chime in. San Diego? where at? I'm in RB.

you are correct remove the last cam cap and it comes out, and replacement is a direct swap. i cleaned the surface free of oil and grime, then add a few dabs of FIPG to make sure it's not going to leak.

So far the engine build is going well.

MM is really close, about 15 mins. away.

 

note the FIPG Silicon by Toyoter is expensive stuff, but well worth it. It's about 20 bucks a little tube. Don't skimp out and buy the cheap silicon it's not worth it to do a 1/2 ass job. =)

you do any offroading around town? i'd like to go once i have the truck running.

 

x2 on the black FIPG from the stealership. I've found a lot of use for them.. I used it to cover my rear main seal leak,
heck I even use it for temporary ding repairs on my surfboard

That's right, unbolt the rear plate and last cam cap and then wiggle out the housing plug. I'll be doing it to the other side as well shortly and will be taking pics in my thread if you need more detail.

 

Well right now i have the truck out in the SDSU area of town. The HOA on my condo complex would have a sh**fit if was doing all this work to my truck. =) Thursday i'm going to install the new windage tray, oil pickup, and oil pan. Paint the valve covers and I should be looking to drop it in on Sat day. So if your willing to roll down that far and give a hand installing it would be great. I can provide the beer.

 

oh you said you used it on the rear main seal, do you know if the FIPG needs to be used on the rear main housing. not the round seal. the actual unit it's self.

Never mind i found out that you should use the FIPG maker stuff. I bought this rear main seal kit from autozone and it actually came with a paper gasket. So i wasn't sure if i should use it or not. The service manual doesn't state it uses a paper gasket.

 

so where are we wrenching? Somewhere near SDSU or in MM?
