I know that no one makes a rear hatch ladder for the 3rd gen 4Runner anymore.

Does this look right for a 3rd gen ladder?

I found this on ebay, and bid on it, but it looks weird to me. I guess I'll find out when it gets to me. and I slap it on the truck.

I know, I'm retarded...and my original post makes me sound more retarded than usual.

The seller said it came off his '01 4runner, so I figure its got to fit... right? Unless he's the retarded one, and really has some other model, and just got confused when he answered my question.

If its not for my truck, I'll find out what model it works with, and resell it. No biggie. I just thought that the design looks odd.

Well i know in Japan and in the UK you can buy rear hatch ladders for 3rd gens. And i do like the look of one on a 4Runner. If they where not popular they would not sell them right.

Most of my wheeling is done at one of the many fine mall parking lots around town. My favs are Chesterfield and West County.

I'm out in Wildwood, so there is a lot of new subdivision development going on around me, and I'll take my truck out to those spots whenever I get a chance, after the work crews leave. Once or twice a year my friend and I drive out to the powerline trail, but there really aren't that many options near us.

St. Joe is just a sand pit (boring). There's an off-road park in IL that I haven't been to, and I hear that's pretty fun, and I think there's another one out hwy 55...not sure.

For powdercoating, I'm going to give HP Powdercoating a try. He's a site sponsor on some of the local forums I'm involved with, so I'll throw him some business. He does a lot of motorcycle frames, wheels, and valve covers. From what I've seen, it looks like top-notch work.

Well I got the ladder last week, and it looks exactly like it does in the picture. It is a little tough to get an idea of its shape from the pic lacking depth perception.

Its all chrome (yuck). Now I have to decide if scuffing it and painting it is good enough, or if I really need to powdercoat it.

No, Not much to test fit. It literally just clamps itself on to the edges of the rear door.

I need to soon though. I am a little concerned that it might not fit with the factory rear wind deflector.

it was said before and I'll say it again, that thing looks like it was ran over then put on. but to each his own. I just stand on the tire if I need roof access.

 

I'm hoping it doesn't look so odd after painting it black.

Funny.............That ladder rack thingy is the same one they put on every SUV in Costa Rica.
I've never seen one in the states but they go along with really odd shaped chrome roof racks.
Very Common on Costa Rican Suv's.

p.s.........I just built a bully step out of 2X2 steel and 1X4 steel to fit my receiver.
IMO..the rear tires are the best steps to get to the roof rack.

 

Unfortunately, I'm semi-crippled for a few more months until my knee heals up and I have a full range of motion. I can't swing around on the truck like a fully able-bodied person can. For the time being, I need a ladder to get up there.

 

I am curious to see how this fits- I see your comment that it just bends over the edges of the rear hatch-but I can't visualize how that will stay in place.....and whether that factory issued spoiler gets in the way.

What kind of cost are these? that might look cool in white to match my spoiler....
