Hey guys,
I can't get the rear differential fill plug off. It looks like the previous owner kindly removed (or attempted too at least) it with a crescent wrench. It's rounded off bad enough I can't take it off with a box wrench. I've tried using a pipe wrench on it, but no luck. Any ideas?? I have to get the darn thing off so I can swap out third members.

Weld a smaller nut to plug, use that to get plug out.

 

If I had my welder here I would; I'm in college and I'm working on everything in the parking lot, haha. Thanks for the suggestion, though. I think I'm gonna put some vice grips on it and just hammer the sob until I break the 'grips or get the plug out.

 

Hook up with me sometime and swing by, we'll get that thing off there.

 

You can sometimes get it out with a cold chisel and hammer. Use the chisel at an angle to bite into one of the faces in the direction that will loosen the plug and have at it. Also, if you have a propane torch, heat it up as hot as you can get it. The welded nut works the best, but I often find that its just the heat of the welding that breaks the sucker loose. I had one on a buddy's truck that would not come out, even though we could get a good bite on it, welded the nut on and it came out so smooth, like it was only finger tight. You could even pick up an old nut and stop by an exhaust shop and have them buzz the not to the plug, then remove it later when you are ready to do the work.

 

Well heck, I got a muffler shop down the street to weld on a nut, but I put a wrench on it when I got back on campus and the nut just broke off. SloPoke, I'll take you up on the offer. I have to get this darn thing off. Maybe I can just fill it through the breather hole. Oh well, I'd better fix it right.

You pick up a new plug?

 

Maybe the wax method might help - just heat the plug up a little and run paraffin wax around it - the wax should suck into the threads (like solder) and it should come out.
