ok well the rear axle seal went bad again on my 3rd gen and the toyota dealer isnt going to cover it. so im trying to find out if anyone knows if there is a recall on these?

also i read on here a while ago about a company that has axle seals that wont leak again? does anyone remember what that company is?

and i tried searching but i dont have hours to look at every thread.

 

Did you check your axle breather? Does it work? It could be clogged and causing a build up of pressure causing it to blow your seals. Is it your inner seals leaking? If so they are super easy to replace.

 

My seal broke a year ago too.Check for the breather for sure.i heard other one where the the vehicle has a rolled over before and the axle bent(i think he changed the whole rear axle.Mine was rolled too but i hope the best.
I changed only the inner one because that should keep the oil in.The outer keeps the dast out from the bearings.
Changing the inner is simple,the outer is a bit different story,you need a press machine,and have to buy new rings and bearing(parts department knows what you need).I put some graese into the bearing because the oil wash out the original and when you put the new sealing it does not get more so would dry out and heat up.

ok thanks guys. i did extend the diff breather but i might undo that since it doesnt really get wheeled anymore

probably has nothing to do with clogged breathers. its a persistant problem among all 3rd gen 4Runners.

 

They only way to completely eliminate axle seal leaks,is to replace the bearings,seals.....and most importantly have the buishing that rides inside the seal,pressed on correctly...where the seal rides dead center...Most are pressed so that the buishing barely touches the edge of the seal...any little wear,movement=leak.......I believe most of these were not pressed correctly from the factory,and when repressed in the shop they go back to the incorrect spot.....

 

Correct. If you do not mark where the original bearing retainer position is, you can press it too far and not have any seal contact. I ALWAYS put grease on the retainer and test fit the axle, then remove to see where the seal is riding. even when only doing seals to be sure its in the correct position, and yes, some from the factory hardly have any area for the seal to contact. I usually just press on an additional retainer ring and that does the trick.
