RCA Input without Head Unit/Radio

Hello Everyone,

I recently installed a car computer into my 1997 Toyota 4runner. I basically have a mini computer (Raspberry Pi) that is connected to a 7 inch touch screen via HDMI. Before connecting the Mini computer (HDMI) to the screen, I used a HDMI splitter with RCA audio out converter (because screen does not have audio out) so this is my setup (sorry for bad illustration):

Mini Computer (HDMI with audio) --> HDMI Splitter (connection 1) --> HDMI Touch Screen

HDMI Splitter/RCA Audio Out (connection 2) --> RCA converted from stock amp connector

Basically I need a connector that converts the connection coming out of the car amp (that normally connects to head unit) to go directly to RCA (Analog Audio or Red and White Cable, female RCA)

Hope someone here can help!

Thanks,
Phillip K

its for a factory amp.

if it was an aftermarket amp then I wouldn't have this problem since they already come with a RCA out

I'm not sure if this is what you want, and I'm sure you won't like the price, but here goes:

These guys have stuff that nobody else has, but frequently not cheap. It says '98+, so that could be a problem. Did the amp really change?

Ahh I see, as posted above might be your only option unless you are extremely geeky and can home brew something. I have read many posts of people giving up and going aftermarket and bypassing factory. Sorry I'm not much help let us know what you do and post some pics of this set up!!

Will this hook up directly to the car amp, completely bypassing the radio?

I have read on mp3car that the stock radio controls power to the amp, if this is the case then I might need to tap into the wire harness and create some kind of switch for powering the amp on and off. I'm not sure if this is true, can someone confirm? I always thought that the amp auto turns on when the car is on.

This circuit diagram below should apply. As I read it, the amp supplies ground, continuous power, key-on power, and illumination power to the H/U, not the other way around. I am just guessing, but the RCA speaker inputs should be all you need. Given the Service Hints on the second page, there is no power switching at the H/U. Amp would come on with ACC power. Of course, with this info, assuming your wire colors match up to this 2002, you could build your own. I know you could NOT do this on a BMW, as their H/U has output higher that standard line-in and the amp needs that to work right. But, since lots of people put aftermarket H/U's on the Toyota amps, this should not be a problem for you.

It would be nice to have access to the wiring manual for '97, but the 2002 is the only one on-line. I'm worried the colors won't match.

Found the right adapter

Hey Guys,

After doing some LONG research (couple of weeks) I was able to find the right adapter for my car harness without having to "splice" or cut into the original harness.

Link: http://www.metraonline.com/part/70-8112

This part outputs sound from the STOCK amp to RCA. It comes with a blue cable which needs to be connected to the vehicle ignition power in order to turn on the amp (normally the stock HU would do this with its power button). So my problem is now solved!

Hope this helps anyone else trying to connect a Car Computer to their stock audio system.

EDIT: I'll post pictures as soon as my setup is complete

For future reference, this is probably one of the better forums for carPCs:

It does? Just curious, but doesn't it provide an input from RCA to the stock amp. Otherwise, I really don't understand what you are doing.
