Not to sure if this is the right forum, but I'll ask. I got an 01 tacoma trd that the drivers side rear wheel locks up in slow speeds under light braking, I replaced the wheel bearings, and went through the diff ( I thought it was gears) i think it is abs doin something wierd, but I got no codes. Any thoughts? thanks everybody

I had this problem on my 4runner, take the drums off on both sides just to be sure. I think you have a rear axle seal gone, there should be two seals (Inner and Outer). When you get it replaced make sure the breather on the diff is moving free, and you will have to change your shoes because of diff fluid on them, you can never clean them up properly and make sure your fluid level is good for the diff. Hope this helps.

Did you put the ABS sensor ring back on in the right spot? Installed the sensor correctly? The rings are clean?

ABS shouldn't cause the brakes to lock up, it would activate the ABS.

What the most likely cause is is that your adjusters aren't equally adjusted. Go in the car and pull the hand brake a whole bunch of times, that is how the rear brake adjusters adjust.

Before that though, you can put the rear axle up on jack stands, chock the front wheels, and put the car in drive, the rear wheels will be spinning, both should spin, does only one spin? lightly apply the brakes, does one stop spinning before the other? It will be hard to get them both to brake equally but removing and cleaning the adjusters (especially if your rear axle seal failed) will help.

Check the FSM for the procedures for adjustment.

Another idea, the....thingers (its late sorry) that the parking brake (and therefore the adjusters) are attached to could be frozen, not allowing the adjusters to work properly.
They are the little things that the e-brake cable attaches to on the back of the drums, they should move in and out freely (but with tension from the spring) Make sure they move freely.

My brakes would lock up after the 4R sat in Park for a few hours. When I tried to move forward after being parked for a while the brakes would be "locked" it required signifigant "gas petal" to move the truck again. The cause was leaking rear axle seal. I was luckly and was able to use the same pads. FUnny thing was it only happen in forward, never and issue in Reverse. I replaced the "easy" seal and the problem is gone.

Hey Folks bad news, I backed the adjusters all the way out, checked for oil leaks, put it back together, and it still does it, now at low speeds I don't even have to push the brakes the wheel just locks up, then I put it in reverse to unlock it, I'm pretty out on this one. Any thoughts? Thanks

does it have a lockers in the diff? and if u jack it up does that tire move freely or not at all?

if your axle seals are good and not leaking oil, I would replace the brake pads... My rig was doing the exact same thing with one wheel locking up. I had it checked out and the axle seal was leaking. The tech said he thaught my pads looked good and they cleaned up good, but the were already compramised by getting oil on them. It continued to give me problems so I took it back and had them put new pads on. After that I've not had any problems...Give that a try

make sure and put new springs in there to. ive had this problem happen and it was a broken spring. i suggest re-building your rear breaks. wheel cylinders, springs, hardware pads ect.

Put new shoes and drums on it and you won't have the problem.
