Questions about wheel stud upgrading!

Yes, I did use the search button, there wasn't as much in this section, so I went farther and just searched throughout the site, I did find this;

Could someone verify if the same size studs he mentioned there (1/2-20) would fit a 3rd gen 4Runner (notice how he said his were on an '85)? I'm only doing the studs up front, I want to get rid of the bolt-on spacers, and I have a broken stud on the spacer as of now, which is why I have to keep them on until I get longer studs.

Also, does anyone know the stock length of the studs? With my front wheels on, I only get a few full turns of the lugs, which obviously isn't enough. I have to decide how much longer I'll need to go, the 2 7/8" or 3/8".

Another thing, if anyone has done studs, what brand do you recommend? Stay with stock (going with the Lexus ones that I've heard about), or go with aftermarket, like Dorman.

And... if anyone has any part numbers, that would be awesome!

Thanks for any help guys, much appreciated!

Awesome Scub, thanks a ton for that info!

I might go with the Lexus ones, I see they are 2.6" (66mm) in length. Does anyone know the stock size of the studs on there now, and how much longer I'll be going with these ones?

Lol, the link on CustomTacos shows specs for dorman replacement studs which ate said to be close to oem...

Front are ~1.574"
Doesn't say how long exactly the rears are. States the length for 2000+ but...

1/2" = 12.7mm
OEM are typically M12x1.25
Never had any luck with Dorman wheel studs on older Toyotas as they just never fit quite right. OEM slide right in.

Why are you getting longer wheel studs? If you need wheel spacers now, longer wheel studs won't compensate.

Full thread engagement is the thickness of the stud, or 12mm.

Impact happy tire monkeys at cheapo places bust wheel studs off wheel spacers a lot it seems.

The reason I got the bolt-on spacers (from you, actually) in the first place was because there is no stud room in the front to go on, I get maybe 3 or 4 turns of the lugs and that's it. Another reason was because I didn't have a body lift at the time and I had serious rubbing issues. Since then I've put on a 1" bodylift which solved that issue. I'm looking to get some (I would love to try to stay OEM) that are just a little longer so I can safely get my lugs on more than a few turns.

Hmm, so I'm deciding to go with either the Lexus ones or just get the ones that are for the rear and put those up front? Still searching for the length of the rears though. :/ Anyone know if I could buy these from the dealership, or what my best bet would be?

Hmm, I see that they do sell them on there. Maybe I'll just get 12 rear ones, here is the lengths, sizes and angles of the 2. Would this work?

Front -
Thread Size: M12-1.5
Hex Size: 14.20 mm.
Thread Length: 40 mm.
Seat Angle: 8 mm.

Rear -
Thread Size: M12-1.5
Hex Size: 14.17 mm.
Thread Length: 44.5 mm.
Seat Angle: 12.5 mm.

Bumping this, if anyone could see my previous reply about just buying 12 rear ones and putting them up front, would this work? The seat angle is different, does that mean they wouldn't stay in, or am I wrong?

The "knurled" section is typically located in a different spot from front to rear studs.

You will just have to visually compare yourself.

Hmm, okay. Well when the time comes maybe I'll just go with the Lexus ones, since they are just a tad longer than the stock fronts, which I need!

For future searchers, here is some more information about stud dimensions as referenced by scuba above (http://www.customtacos.com/forum/sho...90&postcount=7) and filled out with presumably 1980's and 90's 4WD Pickup rear studs.

We'll start with Dorman's. Dorman makes replacement wheel studs, and I assume their specs are close to OEM:

610-244 for 1985+ 2WD 5 lug front studs
Knurl dia.: .559" (14.220mm)
Knurl length: .314" (8.000mm)
Length: 1.456" (37.000mm)
Thread pattern: M12x1.5

610-266 for 1984+ 2WD 5-lug rear studs & 6-lug front studs
Knurl dia.: .559" (14.200mm)
Knurl length: .314" (8.000mm)
Length: 1.574" (40mm)
Thread pattern: M12x1.5

610-312 for many 6-lug (4WD) rear studs (looks like early 80's till at least late 90's)
Knurl dia.: .5577" (14.17mm)
Knurl length: .492" (12.49mm)
Length: 1.752' (44.5mm)
Thread pattern: M12x1.5

610-462 for 2000+ 6-lug rear studs
Knurl dia.: .559" (14.200mm)
Knurl length: .670" (17.02mm)
Length: 1.736" (44.10mm)
Thread pattern: M12x1.5

And ARP studs:
100-7702 for GM
Knurl dia.: .580" (14.732mm)
Knurl length: .300" (7.620mm)
Length: 3.20" (81.280mm)
Thread pattern: 7/16-20

100-7715 for Lexus IS300
Knurl dia.: .558" (14.173mm)
Knurl length: .230" (5.842mm)
Length: 2.60" (66.04mm)
Thread pattern: M12x1.5

100-7718 for Celica
Knurl dia: .565" (14.350mm)
Knurl length: .325" (8.255mm)
Length: 2.34" (59.436mm)
Thread pattern: M12 x 1.5

As far as cutting the ARP studs, I've asked the same question to them before, and they stated that it should not be cut as heat decreases the strength/integrity of the studs. They said not to bother cutting it with a hand tool.
