Question About rollbars

Does anyone have a roll bar on their Toyota Tacoma and if so have you ever rolled it and did the rollbar help minimize the damage to the cab??

that kinda depends on how you roll the truck dosen't it??

if you roll it going down a hill you'd probably screw up the whole front end but if you're going up a hill and it rolls on the bed it would probably save it... if it's a real roll bar. i've had no experiance w/it though... but i'm sure it would help reduce damage on the back of the cab close to the bar.

Rollbar's primary job is to just keep the cab intact so you don't get a severe headache.

The only way to really minimize damage in a real rollover is an exo-cage...

Roll bar doesn't do a whole lot, especially the weak chrome ones you usually see...

True. The bolt together jobs that you usually see don't do much at all except hold up your lights. A proper roll bar won't protect your truck, but it might save your skull.

I've seen a 1st gen truck in my area with the full cage thing that wraps around the whole truck, makes it look like it's ready to travel across some huge desert then through the amazon or somthing...kinda funny IMO but it looks kinda neat.

It has (or had...dunno where it went) a roof rack and bars that went down from that along the sides of the windshield and down to the bumper guard (what are those really supposed to be called anyway??) and more coming straight down attached to the underside... i wonder if it was functional?? it would be cool if you could roll the truck and come out undamaged if it was a slow roll on flat ground....

That cage that you saw all the way around the truck is called (in Pirate and many other rockcrawling terms) an Exo Cage. It is a cage designed to not only save the driver and passengers from harm, but the outer metal of the truck. Keeps the truck looking good and saves from the crumpled up look. These cages go all around so not one part of the physical truck will get smashed in a simple roll over. Tieing the cage to the underside or frame is the only place to make it really solid.

to make a roll cage work properly, it has to be tied (welded) into the frame in several locations. as flamed said, the bolt together ones are more a show item than funcional. the exo cage looks pretty awesome and is very functional, ive seen on in action recently and it worked perfectly. it made for a very interesting time to pull this chap out when his 90 toy stalled and the front of the cage dug into the dirt washout he was crawling up. took two of us to get him up and out, the only damage was a broken birfield. he said it was the original one so he wasnt too upset at it breaking.

I was curious, how heavy would a proper one be?? good construction, and welded on nicely. Also what are the common costs, and where would you get one put on? I'm assuming, they weigh a lot, cost even more, and you get them at an off-roading shop....lol. But if anybody knows for sure....that'd be nice to know.

When i get my truck (or 4runner) I'd love to get one, and I'm curious how much they'd weigh the truck down and hinder it's performance. I know a bunch of steel won't make it faster....

Man now that i used that smiley, it makes me think of how i felt when i woke up this morning..... . I haven't been feeling well and i was overwhelmed with pain in my head when i stood up to go get food...

thanks lee!! greatly appriciated...

I know it sounds silly but i can't wait to get my truck... I don't know why i'm so into toyota's...

I think back to the future started it for me... that is the best movie because it has a delorean and a great pickup all in one movie :p

Anybody else really like that truck? i sure do, its an 85 or 86 i think...

It's kinda weird how i'll see something, and then years later remember it and come back to it, i think back to the future is when i was introduced to toyota's but i wasn't into cars enough to care....and knowing i'm nearing buyinga truck i rememberd what i saw... same with RC cars, i saw a "gas powered" one when i was little and got one years later when i found an RC magazene, just out of the blue wanting one again. weird...
