I just won an ebay auction for an Amsoil air filter and I am wondering if I have to worry about the new filter coming overoiled. Also, how would I be able to tell if it was overoiled? Thanks for the help.

I dropped mine straight in when I got it but I wouldn't advise doing that. Seems like the best thing to do is to lay out some paper towels on the ground, put the filter on that, more paper towels, wooden board on top of that, and sit/kneel/stand on the board for the towels to soak the excess.

I understood his post very well, but I wanted to bump my thread to the top and get some more opinions, so I used that smiley. Also, he didn't answer my question about how to tell if the filter is overoiled.

Just because you are a mod on this forum and I am a "noob", doesn't mean you have to be a smartass when you answer my questions. Thanks to the people that gave real answers. I would think a mod would be someone who actually contributes some useful posts to a forum.

and if you had an inkling of how a forum works, you would SEARCH and ask questions based on your results.

so in summary, look around, search around, read, ask intelligent questions and most of all, learn the culture of the forum here before you run your mouth off.

I realize that using that smiley was misleading, but I wasn't thinking it would confuse people when I used it. I have been using the search function a lot, but I haven't found anything that answered my question. If an answer does exist somewhere on the boards then I apologize.

If you search specifically on excess oil on the Amsoil filters you won't come up with much but if you read on the basic maintenance of the filters you'll see the paper towel trick come up repeatedly.

For what it is worth, I put mine in straight out of the box and had no problems from excess oil whatsoever.

i honestly don't see what's so difficult to understand about Tacoma Dude's response. he answered your question in a very polite and helpful way. until you get the filter in your hand, you won't quite understand it. the filter looks like a giant black sponge, and it'll be oiled to all hell, at least mine was. i did a SEARCH, and read many posts, most of which told me to do the paper towel trick.

i don't see where you go off making this a mod/noob battle. bob98sr5 was just pointing out the fact that it was unnecessary for you to bump your thread like that, especially when this topic is well covered in the forum, and when it was answered already in this thread.

Its hard to explain if its overoiled without showing you, just use paper towls to dry an excess off and you'll be fine....Your hands shouldnt get completely covered in oil after handling it....

I guess I should have read more on here about the amsoil air filter. When I got mine I patted it down with paper towel and popped it in. Then about 12k miles later I pulled it out to check its condition only to find a puddle of oil in the bottom of the air box. Everything behind the filter seems clean but that oil puddle was a little startling. I had kind of assumed that it would be oiled correctly from the factory. Now I am wondering if I should be pulling out the MAF to check its condition along with the rest of the air intake. So if your thinking of getting one of these (I still think they are one of the best air filters you can buy) just make sure to really squeeze out that excess oil.

On a related topic, how often do you guys clean your air filter? Mine still looked fairly clean . Should I still clean it or is it too soon at 12k miles?

waycan, 12k is way too soon. I think the average interval is about 25k, but not sure about it. I'm sure others will chime in.

my answer is "it depends".

typically, i'll clean mine every 3-6 months. if i off-road, ill clean it soonafter.

I clean at every oil change. 15K with Amsoil.
Like Bob I may clean if it's been significantly dirtied by a recent trip. I should probably clean mine now... I didn't see much action at Superstition but there were a lot of dirt roads out there.

By the way - I know what you mean about the puddle of oil. As I mentioned in an earlier post I dropped mine straight in after pulling it out of the bag and have yet to clean out all the gunk in the dirty side of the airbox.
