Question about 4 and 5 speed trannys

I'm curious, and also did a search , but to no avail. I am doing a swap for my buddy from a 5 speed to a 4 speed transmision on an 83 Toyota truck, 22r, no mods to speak of. Now before he goes out and buys the 4 pseed transmission, I was wondering if the W56 shift handle will fit the 4 speed transmission seeing as the transmission he can get has no shift handle?

Thank you for any help in advance.

No advantage to speak of, more of a money situation for him. It's his only vehicle to drive, the W56 is shot and needs a rebuild, says it's going to take about a week to rebuild( his friends shop) and $150.00. He uses this truck daily as he owns a log cutting buisness. He can get the 4 speed for $100.00, and he can be up and running in no time.

If it doesn't fit, an aftermarket one shouldn't be too expensive.

Yeah, I agree, He's just on a truncated timetable and we are just shadetreeing it until he gets another W56.

to my knowledge there's no aftermarket shifters really out there for our toyota transmissions. hurst makes them for newer jeeps though, which use the AX5 and AX15 trannies(essentially a W56 and R150F respectively) so that could be a point of interest.

is the truck 2wd or 4wd? is the transmission a top loader(L45) or a side loader(L43)? might be able to help then.

kyle,

the truck is a 4wd and the transmission that is currently in it is a top loader, I hope that helps and thank you for the response.

alright, so is the 4 speed a top loader with a non-removable iron bellhousing as well? if so, you're in luck, the sticks will swap. in fact, the trannies are EXACTLY the same except for the 4 speed is missing a 5th gear, and if it's an '83 tranny it'll have a slightly bigger input beraing

hello got a 83 sr5 pickup trying to swap in a trany from a 86 i beleive. Everything looks like its going to bolt up except drivelines and crossmember are off by a few inches any ideas from someone who has done a similar tranny swap?, and i have to either rebuild the bearing on the other side of the retainer plate or take it to a shop any ideas on that too?
