Question for '92 plus 3VZE owners.

Both KRASH and myself are stumped and we need your help.

I bought an SR5 cluster in hopes to swap it out for my current super ghetto cluster but we're running into some problems.

It is to our knowledge that there are two types of speedometers: mechanical and electrical. Mechanical clusters were provided in 3VZ-E up until '92, and electric clusters were provided after '92.

KRASH only has experience with mechanical speedometers. Mechanical speedometers have a tube on the back of the cluster, straight behind the speedometer where the speed cable goes connected into. Nor KRASH nor myself have experience with electrical but we were assuming that electrical speedometers have something else in place of the tube to determine speed, although we are not sure what, if different.

So there inlies the problem.

We are having a hard time determining if this indeed is an electrical cluster or if it's a mechanical cluster.

So we need help from all you late model 3.0 liter 2ND GEN 4RUNNERS/TRUCKS. Perhaps with a detailed close up picture of the cluster, we could determine if it is eletrical.

Or if any of you have done swaps in the past and have images available of the back of the cluster that we could look at. We would gladly appreciate it.

Thanks,

KING

I'm pretty sure its a mechanical speedo cluster. The question I have is if the 2nd gen 4runners followed the same pattern as the 3rd gen pickups. I would assume that they would. That would have meant this 95 was definitely an electrical speedo cluster. Following what I've read on other forums the electrical speedo change was around 92 that would make King's 94 pickup and electrical speedo.

Sorry don't have any pics but I have taken my cluster out before, '93 3.0 V6 SR5 4Runner. All that is on the back is 1 or 2 electrical connections, can't remember exactly how many. The back of the cluster looks like a printed circuit board, with connections going to the guages and lights. There is no speedp cable on mine, just wires coming from the outlet of the tcase.

Hope this helps a bit.

Ok that said, I believe, from what I have read, that they sent King a cluster out of a 92 or earlier 4runner. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Has to be, I was out pulling parts offa my parts truck, looked at it and its an electrical speedo because there wasn't a speedo cable where the dash used to be.

The only conclusion that I can come to is that something is different with the 4runner and the pickup in how they implemented the electronics speedo.

Hey if you can throw me the vin number off of that cluster I want to check something.

edit: found the vin number, checked it, its did come with a mechanical for sure, so the ebayer you got the speedometer from didn't send you an earlier one.

So you are saying that the vehicle this cluster came from did have mechanical speedometer?

So could you check my truck?

That'll be later tonight. I am currently at work, just about getting off.

It'll be another two hours before I head home.

Here is my VIN anyway:

What I'm looking shows a speedo cable but I think its the exact same paperwork I looked at for the 4runner. I don't know if what I'm looking at would be a definitive answer though.

OK, close enough.

I will take the cluster off perhaps this weekend to clear all doubt.
