Question: 2nd gen, what is this?

I'm thinking one's a speaker place holder (for the premium audio system, i dont know if my truck came with it stock or not), and the other is an air vent? which one is which?

thanks for any info

im pretty sure they're both spots for speakers and or tweeters. i've taken those parts off and looked to see if there are any brakes or anything for speakers, but it didn't look like it.

The round one is for a speaker, the other one on the side is a vent. You're right, only the premium 6 speaker system has the speakers back there. Try this: turn on the ventilation full blast, not recirculate. Keep all the windows and doors closed. Go to the back where the back windows end and you'll see some vents. Air should be blowing out the back there.

thats what i was thinking. another question:

did they put those holes there (the speaker ones) even on the systems without the premium system? i would assume they just made one rear pannel

Yes, the round ones are for the tweeters. The 6 speaker system also has an amplifier in each rear speaker box, IIRC they also power the tweeters.

The cover just pops off, easy to see if speakers are underneath.

Trust me, you arent missing much. First thing I did was yank the stock tweeters/speakers/amps and replace with Eclipse components after some modifying. The replacement tweeters fit the original brackets fine.

After my factory head unit bit the dust, I replaced it and I don't think the new unit recogizes they are there, who knows. Besides my tweeters usually don't kick on. Who has replaced the speakers in the back? Is it really hard? Did u replace the amps too?

i replaced the speakers in the back of my 94. its kinda hard, but not really. there are lots of clips so you really have to pull hard to get it off. i wasn't really sure if those were amps or not. so i didn't replace them or anything.

Pics part 1
From top, original rear speaker amps, rear tweeters and head unit amp.

Rear speaker amps fit inside the factory speaker boxes with the heatsink on backside of amps sticking out thru box.

Same thing here...I think it's because of the amplifiers, I doubt they are hi level inputs...it's possible though...
