push button 4Hi testing

I just bought a '99 4Runner Limited that has the 4Hi button on the tc lever. When i push it I don't feel any engagement bump. The indicator on the gauge cluster is not working so I have no feedback. Should I feel an engagement or is it really that smooth? Is there any way to test if it is engaging? Id like to make sure it works before I get into a situation that would require it.

On mine I hear the click of the relay and a slight clunk from the centre diff, and that's about it. My indicator works so I know it's engaged. You could always jack up all four and check if the front driveshaft is turning.

Hmm... I get no click or bump. Maybe i have a blown fuse or relay. That could explain the indicator. Ill do a little probing.

I checked the fuse box and the fuse is missing....d-uh. I'll pick up a fuse tomorrow. hopefully there isnt a good reason the fuse was pulled....

I bet it fixes the non-working clock also.

The clock is another issue. It's pretty well documented. The circuit board solder points get brittle and fracture. Removing and taking it apart are in order. Find the fractured joint and re-flow it with new solder. Or, send it to one of the online clock fixing shops.

you should be able to test if the 4wd is engaged by turning the wheels as far to one side as possible, and slowly letting the truck advance. If the 4wd is working the truck should feel like its "surging" with the wheels fully turned. there should be a noticeable difference when turning the same way without 4wd engaged.

Thanks for all the input. I replaced the fuse an now it works! I get a click, bunp, and a different "feel" on steering and accelrating. The the 4wd indicater works now also.

I'm not sure that this method works on the Multi-Mode transfer case ('99-'00 Limited models). It would work if he "locked" the center diff by shifting the lever manually. But just pushing in the button equates to "AWD", and allows for driving in dry conditions, but may not do anything out of the ordinary under your test instructions.
