Please help with bulb part #'s

I called my local Toyota dealer today and asked which type bulbs go in the rear brake light and they said 1157. I recently got pulled over and the friendly highway patrol man said that my brake lights were white. I have clear lenses with an white, amber and red bulb in them (parking, turn signal and brake). These red bulbs burned out in less than a month and I really need some new ones. I went to Summit and ordered some 1157 bulbs but they were completely different than what I have. Could anybody confirm what bulbs I need for the brake lights? Any suggestions for some good, bright, long lasting red bulbs? Links? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

96 Runner?

I know the turn signal bulbs are 7440, I would assume the brake lights were the same but I'm not sure. Just pull the casing off and look, shouldn't take more than a philips and about 10 minutes.

EDIT: Just go up to the dealer and be like, I need new brake light bulbs...bring a screwdriver, take them out there, if they're the wrong ones...walk back in and say try again. Also might wanna try searching on this topic to see what comes up, if I wasn't so tired I'd do it for ya but I'm about to pass out. Good luck.

Sorry I forgot to mention that this is on a 96 4runner 3.4L. I need RED bulbs though, not the clear ones that I could get at the dealer. Also I called Kragen and they said that their part # was 7443. I searched yesterday and saw somebody talking about red xenon bulbs that were really bright but I can't find it now. Once again thanks for anybody that helps me out.

So I am assuming that you put on new rear tail light housings??!
If so, calling a dealer and asking what the stock bulbs are won't help. Call the manufacturer of the light and ask them. Although I think most aftermarket tail lights use 1157. Not sure whose *red* bulb is reddest though.

For safety's sake, I would put your stock tail lights back on (yes they use 7440/7443 bulbs...) and then people will be able to safely see what you are doing (you might be able to tell I am not fond of most aftermarket tail lights do to the poor visibility of most of them).

Hey 96yota;

I like those clear Tail-lights too;
You can always go with RED LED bulbs (7443) for your brake lights... you can even get Amber LED bulbs (7440) for your signals..

I get my LED bulbs from here;

Good Luck; PM me if you have any questions!!

I had the same setup... I went to a company called DarkSide for my colored bulbs. They were like $15-20 for the red ones... I guess they have 2 strands of filament as opposed to only 1 strand. Not sure of their website, but I know they have a shop in the valley in SoCal. Try 411 and call them, they were helpful.

Checker or Autozone had those Red gel covers for the 7440 bulbs. We used them on my Ex's Si when the dealer couldn't find any amber bulbs. They looked good, and were red...they just slip over the clear bulb.

Thanks for all your help guys. I ended up going with some 15 LED 7443's in red for my brake lights. They are soooooo bright at night and still are bright enough in the day. My fear with LED's is that in the day they wouldn't be bright enough but these are. I got them here http://spectrumled.com/7443_7440.htm
Really cheap and very good quality bulbs with super fast shipping. I picked up some chrome bulbs in amber and super white too for the signals and parking lights.
