My 2000 4runner 5 sp. 4runner is clicking when I push in and release the pedal. From a search, I found the article on the plastic bushing. Well, I bought it today and was getting ready to install it, and from closer examination on mine, it is the hole where the clutch master cyl. connects to the pedal. (Kotter pin thing.)

My question is, the hole in the clutch pedal is a few 16th larger than the pin that holds it to the cyl. shaft. Is yours this way or is there a bushing that goes in this hole?

I know exactly what you are talking about. There is a gold pin that slides through the bracket you mentioned. Then, a cotter pin is connected on the right side of that large gold pin.

The trick is to add washers on one or both sides to get the large gold pin from moving back and forth. After you do that, put the cotter pin back on. There should be little or no play, eliminating the "clicking" sound.

I did this about 4 weeks ago. No clicking since!

 

Thanks for the reply. That is exactly what I am looking for. Mine has a lot of play. at least 2/16 or more. Supposedly there is a bushing that goes in there. I ordered one today. I'll post once it installed.

A few months ago I started a thread regarding this issue.

One single 'click' when you engage the clutch to the floor.

Then shifting is fine.

I was told the noise was simply the plunger switch for the start cancel, since you can't start the engine without the clutch depressed to the floor. (unless you use the CSC switch on the dash)....

anyway, i just chalked it up to a noisy plunger switch, let me know if there is a sure fix to the problem...although i hardly notice it anymore.

The clicking on my rig was at about 1/8 clutch pedal depression – the clutch cancel switch played no part. Maybe you had a different problem…weird.

Anyway, a bushing or washers…whatever it takes. I guarantee that once you stabilize that gold rod from movement, the clicking will go away. Good luck!

 

When you guys are talking about play in the pedal, are you talking about the last inch or so that the pedal comes out? I thought it might be the pressure plate but hopefully it is what you guys are mentioning here. The only reason I noticed it is because I thought my cruise control had stopped working. Then I noticed if I lifted the pedal the last inch or so I could get it to raise all the way to the solenoid allowing me to use cruise. More info would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. Nevermind, I went out right after posting and see EXACTLY what you are talking about. I thought you were talking about on the engine side of the firewall but now I see its on the interior. I think washers would be best to just place inside the cable bracket between that and the pedal arm itself. That was MY ONLY concern with my newly acquired 97 with 61,000 miles on it. I found a bunch of paperwork in the glovebox and was very happy to find the people that had it before me had Toyota here do ALL their maintenance work including the 60,000 mile service at 54,000 miles. This put a bump in my road but I'm happy again to see its an easy fix. Anyone know what size washer fits in there?

 

It doesnt really matter, as long as they stay. I just used some from my spare parts bin.

 

I will post a picture of the wear on my pedal. The hole where the bronze/gold pin gopes through is more oblong than round. It give the pedal too much play and it click. The gold pin moves way too much in the hole. I'll take a photo of it when I replace the bushing tomorrow.
