Okay maybe I'm just not pulling on the right thing but I went out to change my PCV valve and it would NOT come out!
This is for a 22RE - I just want to clarify that the PCV is on top of the valve cover towards the back (closer to the cab)? And the tube is connected to the EFI, right? The location doesn't seem to match up with my Haynes manual.

Why won't the dang thing come out?!?!?

Did you use a plier? Arent there two PCV valves on our 22re's? The manual only points out the one by the oil cap...

 

That's nothing! You ought to try the 3.0 PCV
It's stuffed under the intake and 9 time outta 10 the grommet is stuck to the valve and dried out! Long pair of needle nose pliers, elbow grease, patience is what you need! :cry:

Is your PCV grommet is as hard as a rock from engine heat? It can frustrating if that is your problem. Yes your location is correct. Grab the valve with some plyiers and work side to side in an 360 motion and pull up at the same time. It should come out.

It should only take a pulling motion and a little twisting...

They sell em at... well I forget now. maybee someone can loan you one


Actually I had problems taking mine out once and it turned out too be the Rubber gasket on the valve cover. It was hard as a rock. After I got it free I was able to get a new gasket. Havent had the problem since.

 

Yeah, the gasket was giving me some hassles - I was wondering what the cost of replacing that might be. I'll have to see what kind of troubles I have when I get home.

 

The grommet shouldn't cost more that about $3.00 to replace. That price is from my local parts store. The stealership may bit a bit higher.

 

That's good to hear. I gave it another try again today and the stupid thing wouldn't come out. I would have used my mini pry bar to get the gasketing off but I wasn't at home and barely had any tools with me

Quick dumb question...
Is the engine supposed to stall out when the PCV hose is disconnected?

 

Mine stalls out any time I unplug it. So, I would say Yes.

 

Yeah the engine will stall, because you are loosing vacum big time. My Pcv was just as stuck as what you are descibing but I got it out. Just tool brute force.
Tried and true method to removing a stuck 22RE pcv valve. Grasp pcv with locking vice grips tightly. Put a screwdriver handle, on top of valve cover and under the vice grips, to use as a lever and push down on the vice grips and try and pop it out. You can also tap on the vice grips with a hammer to try and force it up and out.
OR lastly, (not recomended for obious reasons) Stand on a ladder and jump up & down on the vice grip handle as hard as you can while maintaining your balance on the ladder (have someone inform 911, before starting this procedure).

 

Okay so if the engine will stall with the PCV out where is the best place to put in some Seafoam? I just picked some up yesterday but can't find a good place to introduce it into the engine...

 

you can prop the throttle slightly open to about 1000-1200 rpm by sticking something between the throttle stop screw it shouldnt stall at that rpm

 

Okay so I understand let me recap:
so if the throttle is open the removal of the PCV won't stall the engine?

 

no guarantees, but it will greatly reduce the possibility, the rpm will still drop, but not enough to stall it
