Parts for power

So i have seen in other posts that a good way to gain power to my 4Runner(v6, 2nd gen) is to add headers, a new exhaust, and a CAI. I am only 16 and have no clue where to get this stuff. Do i order it online or will mechanic shops be able to order this stuff? I love my 4runner and want to keep it forever(though my dad says screw it and save up for a newer vehicle). I just want my 'Runner to be awesome! I have also recieved a mag. from Performance products, good place or no? Just need some good sites to check into things...

thanks,

-slow

Ebay has intakes for cheap, i got the one for my tacoma for $105 and its pretty darn nice, looks good too. As far as an exhaust, if you have the money a cat-back is good, but you can get the muffler you want(dynomax, flowmaster, magnaflow) locally and just let a shop do the pipe bending and install for you, just dont go to big or to little on pipe size. I bought a dynomax ultra flow and used my stock piping(was plenty big enough at 2.5") and bought a tip, they charged me $120. As far as headers, I would think online would be the cheapest way but you'd need to ask the 4runner guys where to get em.

From what I hear, Big NO.

Go buy a K&N drop in air filter. Go to a local muffler shop and get a dynomax muffler. Stick with stock tubing size 2.25" I think. Run Techron a few times a year. How much power do you need?

You may want to heed your father's advice. I loved my 94, but I love my 98 more.

Techtron is a fuel injector cleaner.....great stuff too! (at Costco and other stores)

First thig is to do a basic tune up (cap, rotor, plugs, PCV, clean throttle body, adjust MAF, etc). This ill be very important to get the most out of all the stuff you are doing. You can adjust the timing on the distributor a degree or two to get a bit more power but you may need to move up in gas grades as well.

As for mods, the intake will definately help the most. If the CAI is too expensive, then get a K&N filter and cut out the bottom of the airbox (the airflow is quite restricted stock, do not go in deep water (ie over the tires) after doing this tho!!!). Headers will too but they are expensive (get em on ebay if you can). Don't bother with the exhaust...the first two are the most critical. Also have your catalytic converter checked to ensure it is not plugged.

Are you talking about filters like this one

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=2470249503

But I know there are also the filters with the long pipe with the cone shaped filter on the end. Not sure which would suffice.

Well, I am thinking of doing this. I will buy a K&N filter(not sure which, hope you guys can help with that) and then going to the exhaust shop. My tailpipe right now looks like it could crumble apart at any moment, haha. What should i do at the exhaust shop? Do i need a new muffler and catalyic converter? I am pretty sure everything it has now is stock.

No, Just use the drop in filter from K&N. It will fit in your standard airbox. Go here to get the part number
http://www.knfilterchargers.com/search/appsearch.aspx

Also search the forum on how to do a deckplate mod for you Runner, to open the airbox. That way you get better breathing on the road, and can put the plate in when you offroad so water cant get in the airbox.
