Parts for lowering spare

Just seven days after I had gotten my new BFGs A/Ts, I was off-roading and ended puncturing the side of one of my tires.

I tried lowering my spare so I could go and get a new tire but I was only able to find one of the extensions to lower the spare.

So what I ended up doing was I just loaded up the tire in another vehicle and headed to a nearby DISCOUNT and had a new tire put on.

Had I not had another vehicle to do this, I would have been stuck.

I'd like to know where are your parts to lower the spare?

In my '94 P/U, I was only able to find the small extension in my cubby underneath the fold down seats.

I am missing the larger extension which I tried looking for under the hood which is the only place I could think of that could fit.

Insight would be appreciated.

92 Runner 2wd - Mine are under the back seats. You can flip them forward. I'll take a pic when I get home if you need it.

the 1st owner of my truck(there's been 3 owners over the span of 25 years, including me!) lost the original crank/handle, so the 2nd owner made a 1 piece one. it's a long piece of round stock with 2 small pieces of flat stock welded on the sides of it on the end to engage in the slot on the tire holder. it's kinda nice that it's only 1 piece to remember

On my 90 P/U that I just sold, I had the bottle jack and the rods to turn the jack strapped to the wall behind the seat. The hook end of one of the rods was the 'key' for lowering my spare.

I am missing the long extension on mine as well-the one that goes between the crank handle and the hook-ended one. If I understand you correctly, you are talking about that one?

When I bought my truck from the original owner, I didn't realize it was missing or that I even needed it. What he did with it, I don't know.

I found out I needed it when I tried to lower my spare to see what condition it was in.

To get the tire down, I bought a cheapie long 3/8 extension. I put a socket on the extension. I can't remember what size-12mm maybe. The socket on the extension fits over the hook-handle rod. I use a ratchet and not the crank handle to get the tire down. It's crude, but it works. If this doesn't make sense, I will explain again or take a picture.

I guess I could order one from the dealership, but I fear it will cost an arm and a leg.

Even with the proper stuff, I would hate to have to let the tire down in less than ideal circumstances. Especially in the dark.

Yes you are correct, I am missing the long extension.

Like SCOFCO said, I have the small extension that turns the bottle jack. I am missing the long one.

I guess I'll just buy an extension either from the dealer (depending on the cost) or do similar to NIC.

And yes NIC, images would help greatly detail your descriptions.

I'll take a picture for you and post it on my webshots account for you to look at. It won't be anything special once you see it.

It may take me a couple of days to get a picture posted since I am driving my work vehicle for two more days. But, I will post it as quick as I can.

Sorry I took so long. I have to use my digital camera at work, and I forgot it yesterday when I drove my truck home.

As you can see from the linked picture, I have a long 3/8 inch extension. I have a 12mm socket on the hooked piece that I basically hammered on. I just use that and the extension with ratchet to lower the tire. The extension is almost too short and a longer one or additional extension would help.

I'm guessing the 12mm socket could be tacked on so, it would be more permanent. That is, if you have access to a welder. I'm hoping to find a replacement for mine eventually. I may go to the dealer and order one, but its not high on my list of things to do at the moment.

Thanks for taking the time to get a hold of an image.

I will do what you did in the meantime.

I have what you guys need maybe

I have 35s & already sold the chain ratchet undernieth. The tools are from my 2nd gen 4runner. I will sell all of that stuff for $40+S&H if someone wants it. Like I said I have 35s & that stuff is a waste of space. Ben

I only need the one long piece to lower the spare which, to be honest, I have no idea what it looks like.

Sounds like the part is the rod with the hook on the end. The diff may be that a truck has a two part rod with hook when the 4runner has the solid single rod with hook. I have that part if you want it. $15+S&H. What is needed to lower the wheel from the hoist is the rod with hook on one end and square fitting on the other. You also need the tire iron with the square fitting that I would assume you have. Let me know what you want and its yours. Ben

I don't think he needs that one, but the long straight piece like the one in the linked picture:

Yeah thats a two piece tool. I have a solid one piece that would do away with that. I assume the trucks had the kit like that so it could all fit into the tool kit. If he had his tool + the needed tool his would look just like mine with a joint (not weed) in the middle. lol It was just a thought. I could see where it would pose a prob being where to put it/mount it.

Correct BEN, I already have the small extension with a square fitting on one end. This is the same rod used for the jack.

I am missing the long extension that connects into the small extension.
