Parting out a 97 4R MT/V6 4x4

All, i am just trying to get a feel for things but i was thinking about parting out my 97 4Runner MT/V6/4x4. It has 147k on the odo but runs fine--The point being here is that i want to get a newer Truck with the 4.0 and have always heard that an automobile is worth three times as much as parts--not to mention would help those who need the parts....etc. What are your opinions--good or bad

Thanks Henry

Even if you were to make a profit on it, I doubt it would be worth your time, not to mention having a half-stripped 4Runner sitting on your property that you have to look at.

I concur. If you want to part the truck out you will get more money, but you have to be prepared to wait and do a lot of work and mailing of heavy parts... It's really not worth it unless the vehicle was insurance salvage.

Good luck... Does it have a locker, btw?

If it's in good shape I would just sell it cause it's less of a hassle. But if you want to part it, how much for the charcoal canister in good shape?

It is just a plain Jane SR5--I was just trying to get a feel. Time wouldnt be that big of an issue as i would just keep it in the garage. I would have the whole truck to part out--everything!!!--except the rear gears/carrier--i think they need to be rebuilt. but other than that everything.

Parting it out will theoretically get you more money in the long run, BUT:
  1. Will you actually sell at least 80% of the parts in a reasonable time? I doubt it.
  2. Do you have the time to deal with shipping, returns, lost packages, refunds? It can be a real hassle.
  3. Are you willing to keep the junk in your garage for 2, 3 or more years? Time is money. Lost time is lost money.
  4. Are you disciplined enough to save all the money until you sell all parts? You may end up spending a few hundred here and there and end up with a bunch of parts that nobody wants and no cash.
I'd say sell it. You'll probably regret parting it halfway in the process, and it'll be too late.

Whatever your decision ends up being, best of luck!

If you have a good running vehicle that is not wrecked and is as new as a 3rd gen-don't part it out, sell it as a whole.

interesting thoughts--though none seem to be on the positive side...the overall purpose would be to maximize my ROI on an assest i own--getting me closer to a model with a 4.0. I guess more than anything i was curious about what engines and tranny combos would go for--stuffs like that. I do appreciate the feedback and monetary discipline?TVM wouldnt really be the problem. Based on the number banged up Runners out there---i think there would be demand LOL--JK. Thanks again
