hey what do u guys think i should do? paint my grille black or spray some black bed liner on it? this is on my 87 4runner, and i wanna get rid of the chrome look

 

well i think they look good painted hammerite black or dark grey

 

Definately paint it. It will be a lot easier to celan that way.

 

Mine was that crap chrome and I just cleaned it up, sanded a few rusty spots and knocked off the flaking paint and hit it with Krylon Fusion paint, 5 or 6 light coats. Taped up the Toy emlem to hand paint later w/ some new vinyl letters...bling.

I'm doing the corner light trim as well to match, taking the headlights out and cleaning up the rust there too as it was starting to get fugly and woulda caused problems later...proactive instead of reactive.





DEFINITELY don't bedliner, IMO, unless that stuff is professionally done, it is a PITA and doesn't stay on, like on my bumpers I'm having to STRIP it off of now that is it cracking and just rattle can....DON'T USE BEDLINER!!

I sanded the chrome down and painted mine black then after a while I hurculined it.

 

any problems cleaning it?

 

On our blazer we herculined the bottom of body since rocks kept scratching it up. I think it looks good but it's pretty much useless trying to clean it.

 

Go with the flat black and take your time preping it. Sand it for as long as you can stand it and wipe it down with acetone 'till nothing else goes on the rag. Prime and paint. I get complements that it looks factory from people all the time.

Flat black looks better than wabbits gloss. Trust me.

 

alright so i sanded the grille, and sprayed about 3-4 layers of duplicolor primer on it and sanded it, then used krylon semi flat black on, sprayed about 3-5 coats of that, and then i used duplicolor clear coat, sprayed 2 layers of that and sanded off about one layer and did 2-3 more layers sanding off one layer at the end when i was finished. so just now when i went to put it on i noticed a chip already, its a chip that went all the way thru to the fake chrome stuff. so im guna go sand it all again and start all over. if this doesnt work then im off to wal mart to get some bedliner in a rattle can to spray it with.

 

If you want the paint to stick, don't use all that primer junk, just clean it and use the Krylon FUSION paint, made to go on plastic w/ no prep work. Mine has been on chip free now for a while and the bug guts just wipe off.

 

This is what I did to my grill minus the clear coat. The results are flawless. I think flat looks 100 times better than gloss.

 

Grills eat rocks and bugs all day long. Painting my grill took me maybe an hour and half of that was getting it taken apart w/o busting something. I cleaned it off, taped up the Toy logo w/ electrical tape and sprayed the crap out of w/ a coat every 10 minutes or so and got 5 coats on it. No sanding, no priming and the gloss looks a sex-tillion times better than the flat...

If mine gets damaged, chipped, I'll take it off again and slap another coat on it or two on a casual afternoon. Trail rig=Krylon Fusion...Street Queen=do all that sanding, priming stuff...cause either way, you are going to have to paint it again!

lol man look what i started... well i am partial to flat black, BUT wabbits does look pretty darn good. plus hes always the one to help me out on all my threads so....

 

...so you will thank him for the advice but tell him that gloss is lame and flat is the only thing that you would ever put on your rig.

 

lol well i think im guna bed line it anyway... which will turn to flat black soon enough. im also thinking of belining my hood, it has a lot of dings and scratches
