Other Engines in '87 4Runner..?

I've got a '87 4Runner, and I was wondering what other engines besides the 4cyl. will fit? I was thinkin maybe the '88's V6. If possible, any idea what it'll take to convert it?

I'm sure you could get the V6 to work, the ydid in 88. Also in 87 was the optional 22RET - turbo. I had one of those, it was an 86. I thought it was the coolest damn thing ever. Apprently the lady who ran the stopsign thought otherwise.

LIkely you'd have to upgrade the electronics as well of the vehicle to change motors. IMO the 3.0 is a dog, and not worth the work. If you're going to do a major swap, go with the GM 4.3. Otherwise, stick with what you have, or sell what you have and buy an 88 with the V6. I have driven them all, and that's my take on it.

Alright man, I appreciate the advice...this is my first Toyota, and I dont know too much about them. But thanx, so now, the new question is...GM 4.3...what would be involved? Anyone know? Or even, roughly how much to rebuild a 22RE. I've heard they're good motors..but the one in it right now has been dogged, and very low on power. So anyone with some advice would be greatly appreciated.

The 3.0 would be less of a dog in an '87. It still makes more hp and torque at every rpm than a 22RE, and with the lighter weight of a 1st gen with a 5spd you'd be looking at 20mpg city, maybe 18-19 with an auto...not really that bad.

they are several options:

1) rebuild your 22RE. probably the least expensive.
2) 3.4L V6/tranny/tc swap from a newer toyota.
3) 4.3L V6/tranny from a mid-size chevy.
4) 350 V8/tranny from a full-size chevy.

either way, swapping in a new engine requires work and planning on getting it done right. if you do a full engine/tranny swap, i would recommend getting from the donor vehicle like the ECU, wiring harness, engine accessories...

the 3.0L swap isn't worth the money.

i was thinking for swapping in a carbed 350 v8 with slight engine improvements so that i didn't have to deal with the ECU/wiring harness. but that never panned out.
