Opinion on '86 turbo 'runner

This runner is for sale locally, the price is right [although suspect a little bit of a fixer] which is ok… here’s what the ad says….

“SR5 turbo with all options, Body is strait, no rust, very miner dings, interior is in good shape excluding rear hatch carpet that is stained, interior is gray, 168k, needs tune up, idles fine but seams to choke on full throttle. has been sitting for 2 years with only the occasional start and drive around my house. it has a 3" lift w/ 33" BFG mud terrain tires ( 75% tred )everything else is stock.”

I’m figuring at 168k and ‘choking under full throttle’ maybe it needs a turbo? As far as I know its the original engine/turbo/trany [auto]….

I’m looking for a opinion form on this thing from someone who has more experience with these turbo ‘runners….

Looks like it has a very good body and good interior. Does it have the digital dash? If so, GET IT, I would kill to have one.

Then swap a 5 speed in it, and you've got a killer 4Runner!

With a little time and effort, that thing would look AWESOME!! Looks great as it is. Can't really tell from the pic, but from what I can see, it does indeed look like it has a digital dash. If so, then it's priceless. I'd definately get that rig...that is one sweet runner.

get it i love my 86 turbo 4runner..everythin except the auto tranny... but im going to swap in a 5spd with dual cases so.. soon i will love everything about mine. The 22rte is a great little engine that produces something like 15 more HP and 30-40 more ftlbs of torque compared to the 22-re... you can realy feel the turbo pull going down the highway. As long as the price isnt too high id go for it.

Check to see if she is burning oil....and check the intake pipe right next to the throttle body for oil residue. Some is normal but if it is drip oil in there the turbo could be blown. Also turbo can idle with leaks is the "air flow path" but try and rev them just a little and they bog down bad or just die.....

I hated the digital dash in my 87 4Runner turbo. But the automatic with the digital dash has a separate computer to run the gauges and transmission so it's not an easy swap out. Once I ported my exhaust manifold and turbine housing my 22RTE was making some good power and it would take off with the automatic. There's no way you could keep up with it shifting a 5 speed so you don't really want a 5 speed with a good running RTE. The biggest down side was the turbo engine runs bigger injectors and I was lucky to get 15 mpg with it. My current 88 4Runner with the 3.0 and 5 speed is getting 20 mpg but the RTE would easily kick it's butt. The stumble could be a TPS problem.
