Good luck. Re-Tubeing it should really be no big deal.

My front shaft has been re-tubed twice now. It's on it's 3rd center section.

Steve, does it matter whether it is tapered or not in the design?

No, a tube is a tube.

Stephen,

Just think of the upside, you've probably helped out a whole bunch of people by getting this figured out. You might want to think about a tech writeup so this thread doesn't get lost over time....

WOOOOOHOOOOOO PROBLEM SOLVED!!!!! 2wd 3rd Gen 4Runners must lenghthen their driveshaft by 9/16 inches if they install a lift of 2.5 inches or more. I persevered and finally found someone that worked with me to solve this issue. I arrived at 9 this morning and he promptly pulls the truck onto the lift. I point out the issue and he tells me he will cut off the ends of the driveshaft and put a new tube and weld the ends back on and make it 9/16 inches longer because that will put it back where it needed to be to avoid the vibration. The shop was 100% professional and displayed genuine interest in fixing the problem like it was their own. I am so glad I found these guys...someone was looking out for me! It took him about 4 hours to get me in and out. Not a problem. After about an hour sitting in the waiting room, I noticed that this place does a killer business, with everyone from dealers to race teams bringing their driveline components in. There was a guy who came in who was racing a Ford GT up at Road Atlanta who needed some work done for a race somewhere this weekend. The owner is a mechanical engineer with a degree from Cal-Poly. This shop was top notch! DriveLine Service of North Atlanta. Sorry for rambing...Thanks to everyone here on yotatech who helped me with this. Steve Schaeffer, I owe you a big debt of gratitude...it was your idea that set the stage for the fix!!! I would personally buy everyone a drink if I could!!!

Good to hear. I'll keep them in mind for my future needs.

Are you 100% happy with your suspension now? Any squeaks in your front end?

Who's your Daddy?

I shipped your bumpstop adapters out today, that should pretty much ice the cake back there. Did you get or make a parking brake bracket? I don't remember.

Also get a set of 3rd Gen front sway bar end links and put them on the rear bar. There is a potenetal click with the stock rears and the extra cup.

Thanks RT. I love this setup. The ride is super. I learned so much about the drivetrain and suspension of the 4Runner during the suspension install and vibration troubleshooting too. I am so glad I did the TRD/OME lift. The front feels so nimble going over big bumps and the rear is so stable now compared to stock. I will be doing some towing in the next couple of weeks, so I'll see how it feels with some weight on the back. No squeaks yet...I hope I just didn't jinx myself.

Hehehe...yup, you da man. I couldn't have done it without you or the rest of the great group of guys and gals here on yotatech!

I am looking forward to getting the bumpstops on. I got a bracket for the e-brake from you. It was pretty tight.

I'll be on the lookout for some front sway bar end links.

Try to find them in a junk yard, you should be able to get two for 20 bucks. They are over 100 new for two.

Also in late 2000, that is the 4Runner was built in Japan late in the 2000 model year have thicker beefed up shafts.

So the 2000.5 through 2002 are more desirable than a 1996-2000, but finding any may be a challenge.

so did you buy a 20 dollar set up pinion angle shims and fix this simple problem yet? heheh

its just like when you lower a truck and you have to shim the diff the opposite direction to prevent driveline vibes....or in a jeep where most people goto a slip-yoke eliminator so they pinion can be set too 0 and the sliding/slipping now takes place in the driveshaft....

???

The 3rd Gen 4Runner has a 5 link rear suspension. No leafsprings. You can't shim links.

No slip eliminators are made for a 2WD Toyota tranny. He did the only thing he could, make the driveshaft longer.

How much did it end up costing? Any concern that it's too long and if the suspension is compressed that it could put pressure on the drive shaft? Just curious.
