Okay, I'm Done!!! (pics)
I've done all I'm going to do this year I think. She rides good, runs good, and (IMO) looks good too so it's time to take a break and enjoy her, (and start saving up for that winch/bumper, rims, etc...).

nice 4runner! ive got a similiar setup 94 4runner with running boards...I do several trails out here in AZ with it and from experience...if you run in the rough stuff id keep those running boards on till you get sliders...
the rocks and trees will get your running boards before your rocker panels..and IMO id rather dent and tear them up than my rocker panels! they have saved me a few times..plus they do great to keep all that mud and dirt off the body...
however I agree it looks better w/o them.

I haven't really looked into it because the kids are still small and they need the step to get in, plus I like the protection from flying rocks and stuff that they give me like what "westy44runner" says. I have seen some sliders that have a solid step like shelf, or whatever you want to call it, that would suit my needs but I'm going to leave them on for now.

Well it's been a while and I'm starting to get the mod bug again and the first thing that I'm going to do is lose the running boards.
Because of all the rocks, sand and gravel that they use up here on the roads during the winter months, I really need the rocker panel protection that the factory running boards provide otherwise the rockers will get all dinged, pitted, and will start to rust before too long.
So either I get a set of sliders that are removeable so I can switch them with the running boards for the winter every year or try to find a set of sliders that maybe has some kind of solid inserts in between the tubing that can protect the rockers. I recall seeing this type of slider but I can't seem to find them anywhere. Does anyone have any idea where I can get sliders that fit this description?

but seriously, lose the boards...get some mudflaps and sliders to protect the rocker panels.

Mud flaps won't help with protecting the rockers from boulders though. As for my break from modding it, well it's over now, time to start spending some money and thinking about what needs to be done for next spring. Sliders for sure, winch and bumper, wheels.... maybe even SAW's we'll see. I still would like an answer to my question though?

I have never heard of sliders that are removeable, I geuss you could get bolt on sliders and unbolt them but that seems like a PITA. My suggestion is to get some mud flaps and rock sliders. Talk to one of the fab guys like Demello, Stubbs, or 4Crawler, and see if they can weld some solid inserts into the ends of the sliders, something with a kick out in the front should work with a solid peice of steel welded into it.

Looks awesome, it really looks aggressive now. As for the flat plate sliders, you could probably contact Stubbs and get him to just custom weld in a top piece, I was thinking about doing that earlier, and I'm sure he'd be one to help you out with that. Great job
