i've been working on fixing my exhaust leak for the past couple days. i pulled the heat shield cover off my 20R and i found i was missing 4 manifold bolts! i've took it all off and retapped all the holes since most were shot(needed to tap to m12 size because they were so bad)

anyhow, i took off the inner part of the sheild(that goes between the manifold and head) and it has a huge crack running along it. my question is, would it be ok to just remove this thing alltogether? i think it wouldn't be too much of a problem since people run a header without it sometimes. but i don't want to totally mess anything up right now.

is it alright if i leave this flimsy metal thing off, or am i going to have to pick through the junkyard for a less damaged one?

 

The heat shield is designed to keep the rubber hoses and wiring insulation free from extreme temperatures. If thats a risk your willing to take, by all means remove it.

I dont see it cuasing that much trouble over a short period. But I wouldnt plan on leaving it that way if I was planning on keeping the vehicle for an extended period of time.

 

Melting the plug wires is not a risk i'd take.

Back to the actual topic, does a place like downey or pacesetter who makes aftermarket headers for our truck tell us to use the heat shield with their header? I'm not trying to be a smart @#$, I just haven't installed one so I don't know.

 

good luck passing smog inspection if it applies in your state.

it is required in california including the heat riser aluminum tube going to the air intake tube

 

I don't think your 22r has the O2 sensor, but with the 22re the wires to the O2 sensor will melt withour the heat shield (personal experience)

 

well, thanks for the input, i'm gonna just try and reuse the old one. right now my problem is getting the manifold on to the studs. i may have to drill the holes even bigger since the studs are a tad off kilter it seems. i'd personally rather rebuild an engine than mess with this crap

btw, my engine has absolutely no emissions on it. i counted about 3 vacuum hoses, the air holes in the manifold have been welded shut, and theres no smog pump/charcoal canister/etc

 

i have a 1980 toyota 4x4 with a 20r. only 1 year difference.

it has about a bazillion vacume hoses, smog pump, egr, all kinds of vacume modulator thingies.....

i doubt you rig came stock with no smog stuff, no vacume lines, or welded intakes.

good luck tracing the vacume lines and installing them if you have a smog test.

i had only two lines hooked up wrong, they were inverted (from the bazillion that are under the hood) and because of that i initially failed the smog test, goo luck not having any of that stuff.

 

no smog tests where i live. it's kind of nice having such a simple motor. ive looked at the original vacuum diagram though. pretty scary stuff.

just wish the guy wasn't such an idiot when it came to exhaust
