Angry Oil usage has increased!

Once again this 4runner has decided to give me more problems. I'm now going through a quart of oil every 500 miles. This is rediculous. It's not even leaking enough to leave a spot on the driveway. I've never seen it smoke so I'm ruling rings out of the question. I do know that it leaks some around the oil pan. Could a small leak around the oil pan account for that much oil loss?

What else could account for the oil loss?

Once again I'm pissed at this stupid thing. I was hoping I might be able to just fix some of it's problems but apparently that isn't going to be the case. I may just resell my rebuilt injectors and sell this thing because I'm getting really sick of screwing with it.

Did you change to a different type of oil? Like go from dino oil to synthetic?
I didn't have leaks until I went to a synthetic oil and now I found it started leaking from the oil cooler gasket. I used some lucus synthetic additive to thicken things up and the leak has slowed quite a bit. I think it is honestly the type of oil. I tightened the oil cooler fitting and it's tight so I guess the next oil change will be a blended oil.

Nope. My oil cooler has already been fixed once. I may pull it in the garage and pull the skid plate tonight. Maybe I'll get lucky and figure out what the problem is. After my preliminary looks, I couldn't find anything.

Once again I'm finding myself browsing the classifieds...

I had leakage out my rear main seal. Did a AutoRX treatment...then a rinse...leakage disappeared. Hasn't used a drop of oil in over a thousand miles this week. 1st treatment turned the oil absolutely black in 1500 miles...unusual for my 3.0. Rinse has turned pretty dark in the same mileage. It's gonna get another treatment this weekend....as recommended for high mileage engines.

check the intake for oil. Could be that those clever sound deadening devices are holding on to the oil pushed up and through the pcv system. Have you tried changing the pvc valve?

Changing your PCV is a great idea. On 1970's GM cars, if the PCV valve was defective, it could drain your oil in a short distance. I'm not sure if it's the same on Toys.

It was done about a year ago. My TB is clean so no oil is going through it. It started a little rough yesterday but then smoothed out. I started her today and she ran like a champ - no smoke at all. I revved her up when she was cold and not one bit of blue smoke came out. I've got no idea where it's all going. I'm stumped.

I looked at my intake today and here's what I found.

Oil...(AFM side)

More Oil...(air tube side)

And a fairly clean looking TB...

It looks like I may be replacing my PCV valve again. This time I will do it myself since I'll have the intake plenum off anyways during my injector swap.

How's it look underneath? It's possible that it isn't leaking unless you're driving it... I have an old truck that leaks like niagra falls when you move it around but manages to hold it's lube more or less when it's sitting still. This was my fault because I botched up the rear main install, but still... Something to consider. 1qt in 500 miles would make one hell of a mess if that was being sucked through your intake... change the PCV, but don't be surprised if that doesn't fix it.

Check your coolant too, just to make sure you aren't sending oil into there.

Did you check to make sure the oil filter is on tight...I know one time i thought the rings were leaking oil but it turned out to be just a leaky oil filter.

If it's leaking while moving, you'd most likely notice oil from the point of the leak back towards the rear as a fine coating over the undercarriage. Any oil showing up in your coolant?

That's what I was thinking. I won't be suprised if that doesn't fix it because with my luck it probably won't.

Coolant has been checked and revealed no oil. I'll double check it again tomorrow.

Yeah it's not leaking.

My new factory 3.0 which was installed at the dealer was burning about a quart of oil every 1000 miles. It was doing this at 12k miles too, so it was past the break in period. Wasn't leaking, smoking, or running bad. I would drive mostly freeway miles and with the 5-speed my RPMS were always high even in 5th gear. Someone posted that they called Toyota and they said it was normal for the 3.0 to burn oil like this.

Huh???

My 3.sl0w had over 205,000 when I sold it and it had just started to use maybe 1/4 to 1/2 quart per oil change (3-4k miles).

I would have taking it back and told them it was using 1 quart every 500 miles so they would fix it. I know you shouldnt lie but they recommend 5000 mile oil changes....if you using a quart every 1000 miles you wont even need to change your oil.....just change the filter every 5k...hehe
