Odd noises coming from my engine when AC is on

Hi guys,

I've been getting some strange noises coming from my engine when the AC is turned on in my 98 4wd 4Runner SR5. It would squeel very loudly when I had the AC on but it would stop once I turned it off, so I applied some belt dressing hoping to fix the problem. The squeels don't happen as often as they did, but now when I turn my AC on, it sounds like a helicopter is in my engine. Like the squeels, it quits as soon as I turn my AC off.

Has anyone had a problem like this, and if so how can I fix it?

Thanks,
Billie

You should take the belt off and inspect for damage. Also, look to see if anything would be rubbing or getting caught on the belt. Finally, if the belt seems to be in good condition, try tightening the belt with the idler.

Just replace the belt. When they slip for a while they get glazed and then they always squeal, no matter how tight. So just replace it. Check the idlers while your at it and see if they spin freely. Their is a possibility that an idler bearing is bad.

Thanks guys for your replies. I will put this on my to-do list for the day. Hopefully no more than $50 or so.
