IT's not that the motor won't bolt up. The 3VZ block is the same for both. The difference is the heads. The 3VZ-FE is a DOHC design, the 3VZ-E is a SOHC design. The distributor is located at the back of the RH head which would make for some serious firewall modifications. There are other barriers to a DOHC conversion but in the end it just isn't cost efficient. Lots of butchering would be required to the firewall, actually I don't think you'd have one left.

why do they(toyota)have to make things so difficult?

Ya I did a lot of research on this and it turned out after talking to the guys at DOA that the bolt pattern on the two heads is different. If you have a lot of cash to invest in a project like be my guess to try, you may be able to make the fe heads work if you weld up the old bolt holes and drill and tap new ones. Or just goto town on your firewall and make it fit in the engine bay, or try and swap in the 2.7L which basically has the same power, but is dohc, newer, and an inline engine (less parts to buy when upgrading)

Radrex, check your fan clutch. I'm surprised how often I run into frozen fan clutches. A while back I was shopping for 2nd gens. (my truck got stolen, got it back, long story) Anyway out of 6 that I drove, 2 had frozen fan clutches and MY GOD they were slow! You'd know real quick, thing sounds like an old jeep and gail force winds come from the cowl if you rev the motor with the hood up.
Also, possibly tinker with the air flow sensor.
Lastly, if you have the auto and even 31's, it's gonna hurt. The gearing in that tranny is really too tall. You gotta gear it down or run stock tires.

Nah, I just completely rebuilt this engine personally, it is 100 percent. Everything is new - fan clutch, sensors - everything. I spared no expense since it was my labor.
It runs very nicely, it's just a freaking dog. I wouldn't mind if it was economical - but it get's about 14 - 18 mpg which is about the same as my 5.4L - 270 HP Ford Supercrew. Not very efficient for sure.

Does anyone have the torque specs on the 2.7 Taco 3RZ-FE and the 3.0 3VZ-FE?
Everyone likes to talk about horsepower, but it's torque that plants you back in the seat.
Does the 2.7 4cyl actually have more torque and horsepower than the old 3.0 V6? Maybe if Toyota offered the 3.0 in the std. cab 2wd models then people would say the 3.0's are pretty fast. No?
Maybe it's just the weight thing then. The 4'Runners were just too heavy for the SOHC V6. Right? The little 96hp 22r in mine (2wd std. cab) doesn't feel slow. It's not fast either. However, it's nothing that I would call SLOW. In fact, it's pretty zippy if you ask me.LOL!

I've had mine 6 years and I would call it slow...But so what. On the trail, the 3.0 has good low and mid range torque. I do entertain the fantasy of dropping in a turbo-intercooled diesel, 302 Ford, or the sweetest would be a 4.7 Toy V8 (if it would mate to my manual tranny). But for now, the the 3.0 has 207K on it and keeps on ticking...Why waste the money?

I'm telling you guys, if you'll drive a 3.0 with 5.71 gears you see there is lots of power in the V6. Toyota engineers just geared them too high from the factory, and then we stick bigger tires on there and just make it worse.

MT Goat, I finally changed the gears in my 85 Xtra cab (from 4.10 to 4.88's)and the thing is still slow. Now it will pull 4th up the grade (before i had to use 3rd).But my overall speed hasn't changed. Also now on flat ground i'd say i can cruise at 65(3100rpm)but over that i feel the things reving pretty good.(i have 32" mudders). It was alot of work to change both diffs. With stock 31's / auto/ 3.0 /4runner would it raise the crusing rpm too much for the hwy @ 70-75 ?

Ask and ye shall receive
HP TORQUE
3rz-fe(2.7) - 150@4800 177@4000
3vz-e(runner 3.0) - 150@4800 180@3400
3vz-fe(camry 3.0) - 200@5800 204@4600
5vz-fe(3.4)- 190@4800 220@3600
1uz-fe(V8)- 300@600 315@4000 (these numbers are from the vvt-i version in the gs400)
We really got gipped. When my 3vz went, I wanted to put in the 3rz, but I didn't have time to build mounts and figure out wiring. Also I need the w56 tranny instread of the r series tranny that comes with the v6's
