After reading a bunch of past threads, I'm finding out as a new Toyota owner that the 5-speeds are known to shift kind of notchy. However, I believe my truck is worse than most and is in need of some type of fix. Opinions would be appreciated, here's what happens.

First couple of shifts are smooth when cold (opposite everyone else)
1st to 2nd, very notchy and sometimes I can feel gears, but no noise.
All other shifts very notchy.
Push clutch in and go to 1st or 2nd and truck jumps while making a clunk noise.
Rolling 5-10 mph and move in between 2nd or 3rd, truck clunks.

All these things seem like a clutch that is not disengaging, but why?
No slippage on clutch whatsoever, Infact truck only has 24,000 miles and its a 2004. Just got it.

 

there's a write up in the write up section about the seat under the shifter ball that gets very worn out. Also, I would check the bushing that goes on the bottom of the shifter. The seat is about $20 now at the stealership.

 

Being that it is a 2004, I would be surprised if that shift lever seat and bushing were worn-but it's still worth investigating since it is so easy to check. If you live in a northern climate where it is colder, switching to a synthetic gear oil in your transmission may help. Redline MT-90 seems to be very popular. That's what I have in mine and I like it. My truck can still be a little notchy on the first couple of shifts in the morning, but the Redline has made it much better than what it was.

 

i live in alaska with winters averaging about 40 below zero i have to run full synthetic or it wont move out of my drive. mine has always been a bit notchy from the start even when warm 1st and reverse has always been hard shifting when cold no matter what oil i m running but since changing all fluids to synthetic it has helped a lot though still sticky when cold but mph improved by about 4-5 miles per gallon as well .

 

i've used redline MT-90 with great success. search the term MT-90 and read up and see if it sounds like it will work for you

My 2000 5speed gets a bit "fussy" when the drive train isn't lubed. All the universals and drive shafts need lithium grease regularly. No clunking noises though.

I didn't think 2004 came with manual transmission?

 

Assuming you are accomplished with shifting chores, it sounds like either the clutch pedal height and free play might need adjustment or the synchros aren't getting enough time to do their job. Really odd in such a new tranny. Ck the fluid level.
Yota manual trans are excellent - known for excellent feel and accuracy.

 

I can't find the write up about the shifter ball and seat that Keggo is refering to. Can some please help.
