Is it normal to hear a slight whine in the transfer case?

I have noticed that when I am in 4wd I hear slight whine in the transfer case. I hear it most right around 30mph. The noise is similar to when you drive a five speed in reverse but not that loud. You have to have the heater and radio off to hear it.

It is an 95 automatic 3.0. I heard the noise today when I was driving about 30mph on snow covered roads. I hear it less as I go faster or slower. If I put it back to 2wd drive the noise stops instantly.

The 4wd works perfect. Im just wondering if it is normal for these transfer cases to whine.
