No reverse!!!!

my son has a 98 4runner 2wd 3.4 automatic. There is no reverse. when you put it in reverse its like its in park and neutral acts as 1st gear. What in the world is causing this? tried fresh fluid as well. Tranny shifts perfectly in drive. My first thought was linkage but it is not it. I took it apart and shifted by hand into reverse same thing just rolls forward a hair when let foot off brake like in park. I am baffled.

Just a question, is the fluid to the fill mark?

How long has this been happening? Also do you have any grinding? does it eventually go in reverse?

no grinding and doesn't eventually go. Just happened at once last week and now isn't working.

Sound like it might be a bad band, I would drain a little bit of fluid and look for any shine for small metal bits. I would hit up the local junkyard and start getting prices, and or the local trans shop and have them give you an estimate.
