new windshield in 86 runner (molding ?)
hey all
im about ready to get a new windshield put into my 86 runner. i called a local shop around my area and they want around 200 or so JUST for that chrome molding stuff around the windshield. i really just want some generic black rubber stuff or something becuase that stuff is expensive and i dont really want it on there anyways. so, are there any shops in the bay area that provide a good windshield job that is decently priced and can provide a generic alternative to the chrome molding (some rubber to cover up the sealant that is used)
thanks all.

If this is an insurance job, double check with the glass installer. Mine told me it would be included if I just mentioned that I need it. I haven't tested this out yet though. Mine is that same stuff only blacked out with some kind of coating that is chipping/peeling/flaking off. He mentioned this while doing another vehicle for me and I was asking 'cuz I figured I'd get it powdercoated or something. Also, if you do end up with the same as is on there now, you might want to invest in some new clips that are located under the cowl to hold the bottom piece on. One of mine broke last time and ya know stuff like that on an '86 is gettin old and brittle. Probably at dealership only I'm guessing.

The trim is just to finish off the look of the glass. You can go to a junk yard and try to fins a 80's model truck (they came in black) or do what I did buy the trim from a dealership (expensive). I think Roger Brown had a write up on using plastic or something to make the trim . www.4crawler.com

here in MA you can get it done free through insurance. while that sounds like a long process, all you do is call the glass company, give em your vin and your personal info and they take care of the paper work. then they come TO YOU and do the install right there, and leave.

here is a web site that will send someone to your home in some areas and for my 86 runner it would only be around 200. I know it does not solve your trim problem but they might have that too..
