New windshield for an 2003 4runner

I guess it had to happen sooner or later. Turned ot to be sooner. About 6 months old and my windshield became victom to a rock from a construction sight. The crack is about 8 inches long and it looks like it will have to get replaced. Any advice/suggestions regarding place or brand? Any ideas regarding cost? Can I use my auto insurance? Thanks in advance for the advice fellas.

6 months ? What took you so long ? Had mine replaced within 3 months of ownership.

You should be able to use any local glass company. I used Safelite, but there are others. Be sure to ask for Toyota glass when you call in the request.

Regarding insurance, you should be able to call your agent and find out if your insurance covers glass replacement. Mine did, in fact in AZ, they stated that they AVERAGE 2 windshields a year per vehicle ! Dang... I have to admit, I've had my share of replaced windshields, tho. Best use of insurance money yet !

In any case, if your insurance covers it, the glass company will ask you, and want your insurance info. After that, it's just schedule, they show up, replace the windshield, you sign a paper, they leave.

Piece of cake !

I would think your insurance (full coverage/and or glass) would pick it up minus the deductable.

I would get the Toyota glass. Probably not cheap... Let us know what the cost is.

Price should be 300 or so w/ the toyota glass (USA). If you want the toyota glass (Japan) expect to pay double...

don't go for the cheap POS..... its not worth your life

that price above includes installation too!

The Toy and Lex dealers here replace the windshield for about 800, but it's the Japanese glass come out of a box with symbols on it

Any new car should have full glass coverage

What's the big diff between the US glass vs. the Japan glass ?

Here in FL, if you have full coverage, they are required to replace the front windshield at no cost to you and your insurance company cannot raise your rates.

Don't know about domestic vs. foreign glass, but there IS a difference between manufacturer glass (OEM) and aftermarket glass (generic). Most glass companies that replace windshields carry both with the OEM glass being higher quality. I didn't know this difference on one of my past vehicles and had a crack in the replacement windshield within a month. When I took the vehicle in again to have it replaced under warranty, the guy behind the counter advised me to get OEM glass. He stated that OEM glass is much better quality and has better shape tolerances. Furthermore, he believe the crack was caused by inferior dimensions in the replacement windshield causing it to be stressed and crack.

Ever since, all replacement windshields I have gotten (3) have had OEM glass and I've never had a reoccurance.

I just spoke with Safelite and was told there is NO Toyota OEM glass. Toyota outsorces all of its' glass replacement to generic companies. I cant figure out if it is BS or not. Any thoughts?

Auto Glass

I have been replacing auto glass for about 12 years. As long as you request a major manufacturer's brand such as LOF, PPG, or Safelite brand, you will have no problems as long as the installer knows what he is doing. I personally don't like the companies that come to your place to replace them. You will always get a better job if they do it "in shop". As far as your deductable, when you got your policy it was your choice as to how much of a deductable you want. The more deductable, the less the monthly payments. Most people seem to have a $100 deductable. Most glass companies can waive half, if not all, of it. Merry Christmas to All!!!

Wow no cost, or decuctable. Here in Los Angeles, I had my 03 runner windshield chipped by a rock within a month of getting it. I called my insurance company which I have a $250 deductable with and was told they would cover but my rates would go up. In the end I never replaced the windshield. The crack stayed at 1/3 of an inch.

I've replaced my windshield twice. Once under circumstances that would have shattered any windshield.

Now, I've got another crack in the new one ten inches or so from the passenger side towards the center. I could even give you a good explanation on that one.

But, I'm starting to wonder about a design flaw. Any one else?

I have Farmers Insurance and they include FULL glass coverage as long as you have any deductible. It can be $100, $500 or $1000 deductible and they still will cover the full cost of replacing any glass on any window.

Replaced mine on my 2000 last week in Colorado Springs while I was at Rockware.

They came to the shop while my rig was getting the bumper, installed OEM glass and cost me 250.00

Insurance doesn't cover glass in CO unless you have the 0 comprehensive deductible.

I would pay about 250 a year to keep the $0 deductable so, as long a don't break one every year than I should come out ahead.
